One of boxing’s biggest fights of 2018 is finally here. On December 1st at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) will put his title and undefeated record on the line against former unified champion Tyson Fury (27-0, 19 KOs), himself unbeaten and trying to reclaim his status as the world’s best heavyweight. Many will be interested in seeing the winner of Wilder vs. Fury take on Anthony Joshua (who has the other three world titles) in 2019, and that would be a truly blockbuster event if it were to materialize.

This is the US pay-per-view debut for both men, as Wilder is not only seeking another big win to close out the year, but an elevated profile as one of boxing’s top stars. He went a long way towards stardom with his dramatic come-from-behind KO of Luis Ortiz in March, boxing’s most-watched fight on Showtime or HBO in 2018. Fury is bold, brash, controversial, sometimes hard to watch, but he’s no doubt an elite heavyweight. He’s battled through depression and substance abuse to slim down 100+ lbs into fighting shape, and after a couple of tune-ups earlier in the year, he’s going right towards the top, three years removed from dethroning Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. It’s an intriguing stylistic matchup that pits the heavy hands of Wilder against the technique, footwork, counterpunching, and defense of Fury.
