Jon Jones: I was striving for complete sobriety, but I am not ready for it

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was candid about his thoughts on going completely sober.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is no stranger to drug-related mishaps. Whether it be his involvement with cocaine or performance-enhancing drugs, “Bones” has drawn a lot of controversy for himself.

The 31-year-old was candid about his recurring delinquent habits during an appearance on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show on Monday.

“No, I still drink and smoke pot, too, every once in a while,” Jones said (transcript by MMA Mania). “I’m in a very healthy place. I mean, who knows. My coaches know I drink. Not like a crazy, crazy amount. Some weekends, mainly on the weekends.”

Jones revealed that he entered a rehabilitation facility to deal with his problem, but also admitted that he is not ready to live a life of total sobriety just yet.

“It was something I was striving for, especially going to rehab this summer. I was striving for complete sobriety. But, I am not ready for it,” he said. “It is not who I was and it’s not who I am in my life or career. And I am at a place where I can be honest with myself.

“But, being in there definitely matured me a lot,” he concluded while saying he found all of the help of the trauma center helpful in more ways than one and would like to spend some time in a similar facility once a year moving forward just to center himself.”

Jones is currently scheduled to face Alexander Gustafsson in a rematch at UFC 232 this December in Las Vegas.
