UFC middleweight contender Ronaldo Souza was disappointed to learn that former flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, would depart from the Octagon. With ‘Mighty Mouse’ set to debut at ONE Championship in exchange for the Asian company’s welterweight champion, Ben Askren, getting his UFC opportunity, ‘Jacare’ expressed his disagreement with the decision during a UFC 230 media scrum.
In Ronaldo’s opinion, Demetrious is just too special to let go, but also praised Askren’s addition to the roster.
“I was sad,” Jacare said. “They were removing an artist like that from our realm, but Ben Askren is a great athlete, too. He’s already making some noise, too. But Demetrious Johnson defended his title over ten times, I don’t think it was good for the UFC for them to lose Mighty Mouse. The guy wins by submission, by knockout, he can knock you out with his hands, knees. He’s a different kind of guy.”
While unhappy about the fate of Demetrious Johnson, Jacare won’t have much time to think about Mighty Mouse’s future because he will have his hands full at Saturday’s UFC 230 card, where he is scheduled to take on former middleweight champion Chris Weidman in a fight Souza deems to be quite challenging.
“Yes, we had to make some adjustments,” Souza said. “Chris has great wrestling. He takes everybody down and stays on top using his jiu-jitsu. He has spectacular jiu-jitsu. We had to focus on his jiu-jitsu and his wrestling. He is spectacular, he trains with Renzo Gracie and and Matt Serra who are two beasts on the ground. You have to respect that.”
UFC 230 will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between the champion, Daniel Cormier and challenger Derrick Lewis. Jacare vs. Weidman will serve as the co-main event.
