Dana White ‘disgusted and sick’ after post-Khabib vs. McGregor brawl at UFC 229

UFC president Dana White reacted to the brawl that occurred after Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fourth-round submission of Conor McGregor at UFC 229 on Saturday.

Dana White isn’t happy about what happened after the UFC 229 megafight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

Immediately after the fight, in which Nurmagomedov retained the lightweight title with a fourth-round submission of McGregor, the Russian jumped over the fence and seemingly attacked McGregor teammate and Bellator fighter Dillion Danis. Chaos ensued afterwards — Nurmagomedov teammates jumped into the Octagon and went after McGregor, and security was everywhere trying to stop the madness.

It’s not yet clear exactly who was involved in the massive post-fight brawl.

Minutes later, Nurmagomedov and McGregor were both escorted out of the cage to backstage, and UFC announcer Bruce Buffer announced “The Eagle” as the winner. Nurmagomedov was not physically given the belt after the biggest win of his career.

White, the UFC president, reacted to the incident on the UFC 229 post-fight show on FS2.

“A lot of bad stuff that shouldn’t have happened,” White said of the brawl. “Khabib jumped over the cage going after one of Conor’s guys, who I guess was talking trash to him, and all hell broke loose. I don’t even know what to say right now. I’m just disgusted and sick over it.”

White said he’s glad he made the decision not to put the belt on Nurmagomedov. Fans threw trash at him as he exited the arena, and things would have just been worse had Nurmagomedov received the actual gold, White said.

“I knew that was gonna happen,” he said. “I said, ‘If we put the belt on him in the Octagon, they’re gonna be throwing whatever they got down into the Octagon. So I said, ‘Let’s just try to get him out of here without any incident.’”

Though he didn’t expect the Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor rivalry to end after Saturday’s fight, White said he’s ultimately surprised by what happened after the actual bout.

“They both made it very clear the rivalry would not be over after the fight,” White said. “I didn’t see Khabib jumping over the Octagon — I didn’t see that coming. We had so much security and metro here and everything. I didn’t see that one coming.”

The pay-per-view broadcast captured McGregor getting hit multiple times in the cage after the fight, but White said he’s alright.

“I just talked to [McGregor], I just met with him and he’s OK,” White said. “He’s upset about the fight — not about the fight after the fight.”

White said that three members of Nurmagomedov’s team — the ones involved in the brawl — have been arrested.

UFC 229 took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
