UFC 229 results: Tony Ferguson defeats Anthony Pettis in bloody war

The co-main event of UFC 229 between Anthony Pettis and Tony Ferguson had an anticlimactic ending, but the fight itself was a thriller.

In the co-main event of UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor in Las Vegas, Nevada, former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson took on ex-WEC and ex-UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis in a pivotal bout for both men. Fans expected fireworks and they got it, as Ferguson and Pettis went toe-to-toe and engaged in a slugfest. Ferguson was nearly knocked out early in round two, but rallied and put a beating on Pettis, and unfortunately for fans, the fight ended when Pettis’ corner stopped the fight when a bloodied and battered Anthony was revealed to have suffered a broken right hand. “El Cucuy” has won eleven straight and he called out both Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov in the post-fight interview.

Pettis attacked with a leg kick straight away, going after Ferguson’s knee that had been injured in April. This led to Ferguson switching to southpaw. Ferguson popped Pettis with his jab multiple times over to try and get his offense flowing. Pettis tried a spinning backfist, and Ferguson was able to block it. Ferguson threw his own kicks and steadily pressured Pettis and was the one moving forward. Pettis tagged Ferguson with a right hand and then Ferguson returned fire with a combination of punches and kicks. Pettis looked for a cartwheel kick and ate a right hand instead, forcing him to abort. “El Cucuy” looked to be the one in control as round one drew to a close.

Ferguson charged forward straight away but his carelessness cost him, as Pettis dropped him with a right hand. Ferguson got back up and was knocked down against with a left hand. Pettis looked for the finish as Ferguson was bleeding badly and trying for a leglock. An elbow by Ferguson on the ground cut Pettis and after they stood up, the doctor came in to check on “Showtime.” He was fine, and they were swinging away upon the restart. Ferguson ripped Pettis to the body after throwing a superman punch off the cage. Tony started to tee off on Pettis but ate a counter right hand along the way. A straight right forced Pettis to retreat. Ferguson unleashed a series of damaging blows and Pettis answered back with clean shots that caught Ferguson. An elbow sliced across Pettis’s face, then Pettis threw a hard right hand. Body shots and elbows continued to come from Ferguson and Pettis still wouldn’t go away. He tried another cartwheel kick and blood sprayed across the commentary position as Ferguson punished Pettis some more to end one of the craziest rounds you’ll ever see.

That thrilling second-round proved to be the last action, as Pettis broke his right hand and his coach Duke Roufus opted to stop the fight in the corner.
