UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor main card live results, discussion, play by play

Live, blow-by-blow updates for today’s UFC 229 main card from Vegas, which will see top lightweights compete in the co-main event.

Join us today on Bloody Elbow for live results, discussion, round scoring, and play-by-play as UFC 229 goes down in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The main event will see UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov taking on the most polarizing fighter in MMA, former two-division champion Conor McGregor. One of the biggest events in UFC history will be co-headlined by another top lightweight scrap between former interim champ Tony Ferguson and former WEC and UFC champion Anthony Pettis.

This post will cover the main PPV card.

The show kicks off on Fight Pass at approximately 6:30pm ET with three fights. The card then moves to FS1 at 8pm ET for four more bouts, then onto the main PPV card. The full lineup and schedule follows. The preliminary card and headliner will be covered in separate posts.

Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis

Round 1 - Ferguson with a jab to the body. Pettis with a leg kick. Again. Ferguson returns the favor. Body kick from Pettis. Inside leg kick from Ferguson, and a step-in elbow. Leg kick on both the inside and outside from El Cucuy. Body kick from Pettis, but Ferguson stuck him with a right. Inside leg kick again from Ferg. Pettis with a counter right. They trade jabs. Pettis spins but Ferguson cracked him at the end of the spin. Ferguson bringing all the pressure. Slapping head kick from Pettis. Jab from Ferguson. They trade lefts. Pettis cracks the leg again. Ferguson does the same. Pettis with a right hook. Ferguson with a combo and two more leg kicks. Ferguson spins and lands. Jab from Ferguson. Pettis tries a fancy kick. Overhand right from Pettis. Ferguson right back with a jab and two leg kicks. Body kick. Ferguson with a big right and he flurries at the horn. Pettis shakes his head. 10-9 Ferguson.

Round 2 - Pettis showing some damage on his face already. Ferguson immediately comes forward. Pettis lands a huge shot and drops Ferguson! He pops up and spins and Pettis hurt him again! Ferguson is bleeding a lot! Pettis jumps on top and is working away. Tony is wearing the actual crimson mask. Pettis might be cut as well. He is. Hes leaking blood. Ferguson back to his feet. They’re gonna check the cut on Pettis. It’s in the hairline. There’s a ton of blood, but he’s good to go. Pettis is protesting because he thinks Ferguson is still hurt, but the ref demands a cloth to wipe off their faces. Pettis just misses with a capoeira kick on the restart. Ferguson misses with a knee. Ferguson goes to the body. He’s still pressuring. Pettis wit ha right over the top. Big shots from Ferguson. Elbow. Hard jab from Pettis. Another elbow from Ferguson. Body shot. Hard straight right. He’s all over Pettis now. Pettis is eating big shots but he’s firing back! THEY’RE BRAWLING! SO MUCH BLOOD! Ferguson styling now, lands a hard elbow. Pettis catches a knee and lands a huge right hook. Now a left! This is awesome. Ferguson with a hard right hook. Body work. Pettis is a mess but he’s giving as much as he’s getting. More elbows from El Cucuy. Ferguson putting together a ton of strikes Pettis cartwheels right in the middle of it! WOW! Ferguson lands a few more shots. That might be the round of the year. 10-9 Pettis.

Pettis has a broken hand. He tells his corner, and Duke Roufus tells him he can’t send him back out there without that weapon. Pettis is non-committal. The fight gets stopped. Crazy.

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Dominick Reyes

Round 1 - They both throw leg kicks at the same time. And again. Weird. Reyes jabs to the chest. Reyes with a winging left. Inside leg kick from Reyes. OSP with a left over the top. Reyes with a left. Front kick from Reyes. Right over the top from Reyes. OSP shoots but gets nowhere. They’re in the clinch. Reyes scoots away, then clinches himself. Knee to the belly. Saint Preux looks for the takedown but Reyes uses the whizzer effectively. OSP gets a body lock but eats a barrage of elbows. OSP gets a takedown but Reyes gets right back up. More clinch work. They trade rights. Reyes with two huge shots and he’s all over OSP! OSP is wobbling and not circling away from the cage. Front kick from Reyes. Ouch. Saint Preux is trying to recover. Left hook. OSP fires back. Reyes with another left. Leg kick. Head kick glances his chin. 10-9 Reyes.

Round 2 - Reyes lands hard again. OSP looking to clinch. They separate and Saint Preux lands a nice shot. Reyes clinches now. Not much happens there and they separate. Body kick from Reyes. Inside leg kick. Overhand left from Reyes. OSP with a head kick that lands. Saint Preux partially connects with an overhand left. Leg kick from Reyes. Reyes whiffs on a left, and he’s slowed down. OSP dives in on Reyes’ legs but Reyes easily avoids him. OSP is cut. Body kick from Reyes. He lands it twice. OSP digs to the body. Reyes fires back with the same shot. Low kick from Saint Preux. 10-9 Reyes.

Round 3 - Slapping head kick from Reyes. Outside leg kick. Sweeping head kick from OSP. Body kick from Reyes. Side kick from OSP. Slow pace in the final stanza so far. Straight left from Saint Preux. Leg kick from Reyes. Left hook from Saint Preux. He charges forward but Reyes catches him with a counter uppercut. Reyes with a left over the top. Saint Preux catches a leg and tries to dump Reyes to the mat, but Reyes shows off some impressive balance. They stall out in the clinch. Leg kick from Reyes. Saint Preux with a lead left. Another. Reyes kicks again. He lands an elbow as OSP advances. Saint Preux is REALLY beeding now. Low leg kick again from Reyes. Uppercut. OSP misses with a head kick. Reyes connects with one. Hard ow kicks. Reyes lands a gigantic straight left that drops OSP right at the horn! He looks out but the referee gives OSP time to stand up, even though there was no time left? That was very confusing. It really should have been a knockout win, but I guess it’s going to a decision? 10-9 Reyes I guess.

Dominick Reyes defeats Ovince Saint Preux via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Derrick Lewis vs. Alexander Volkov

Round 1 - Lewis takes the center. Inside leg kick from Lewis. He whiffs on a big right. Volkov with a slapping leg kick. Jumping switch kick from Lewis misses. Volkov hurts Lewis to the body and gets all over him! He looked keeled over but he’s fighting back. Uppercut from Volkov! Lewis is checking his eye, but the ref says continue. He lands another shot, but then Volkov backs off and lts the ref check him. Herb Dean actually scolded Volkov for sportsmanship. Weird. They restart. Volkov pressing. Lewis looks for a takedown, surprisingly enough, but Volkov just grabs him and lays on him. Lewis presses back up though. Big right lands for Lewis! He clinches. Volkov with a trip takedown. Short elbows. Volkov is in side. He’s landing elbows to the body now. Back to the head. Lewis gives up his back. Volkov has full back mount on the bottom. Lewis spins into top position with 25 seconds to go. Elbow from Lewis. He postures up and is trying to land big shots. Volkov uses his long legs to defend though. Lewis stands up and the horn goes. 10-9 Volkov.

Round 2 - Jab from Volkov. He lands a big right over the top and Lewis is wobbly again. Lewis misses with the buckshot right. Lewis’ eye is very swollen. He fakes a takedown. Volkov with a combination. Slow pace. Volkov with a jab that makes Lewis wince. Volkov lands again and Lewis half-heartedly attempts a takedown. Volkov lands, and absorbs a Lewis right on his shoulder. Body kick from Volkov. Another. Lewis with a lek kick but he eats a counter right. Head kick from Volkov. Jab. Lewis isn’t doing anything. Volkov with a combo. Low kicks and jabs. Lewis throws a counter right but it doesn’t land. Another wild right misses. Head kick from Volkov. Lewis lands a punch that knocks Volkov’s mouthpiece out. 10-9 Volkov.

Round 3 - They touch gloves to start. Jab from Volkov. Inside leg kick. Jab. Lewis charges in with the weird takedown attempt and flops to his back. Volkov lets him get up. Lewis stutter-steps and throws a right, but it doesn’t connect. Volkov with a huge uppercut and Lewis is stunned again. Volkov presses with shots, but then lets up when Lewis stands tall. Long jab and some more punches from Volkov. Lewis’ eye is really bothering him. Might be an orbital injury. Body kick from Volkov, and again. Inside leg kick, and now to the outside. Lewis wades in but is nowhere near landing. They both throw body kicks at the same time. Volkov lands the followup kick. Another. Lewis lands a glancing right, but thats it. One minute to go. Lewis actually connects with a right but Volkov takes it. Leg kicks from Volkov. Another overhand right lands for Lewis. A left and right, and another, and Volkov is hurt! He goes down! Lewis jumps on and lands two kill shots! DERRICK LEWIS JUST SLEPT ALEXANDER VOLKOV WITH LESS THAN 15 SECONDS LEFT!

Michelle Waterson vs. Felice Herrig

Round 1 - Herrig with an outside leg kick. She’s pressuring early. Waterson with a nice body kick. Another one while Herrig tries to throw a right hook. Side kicks from Waterson. Another one right as Herrig throws. Body kick from Herrig. Outside leg kick from Herrig. Waterson with a jab. Oblique kick from Waterson. Herrig with a glancing left hook as Waterson was on the move. Waterson is suddenly on the move a lot more. Herrig flurries and lands a couple of punches in a combo. They clinch. Herrig has a body lock. She lands a few knees. Inside knee from Waterson. They trade short shots. Herrig working hard for a takedown but an’t get it. Knee from Waterson. Herrig with a knee. Waterson with a right hook on the break. 10-9 Waterson.

Round 2 - Straight into the clinch. They trade knees and break. Herrig grabs her and looks for a takedown again. More knees from both. Waterson sluffs her off and throws an elbow but Herrig grabs her again and grinds. More knees from both ladies. Waterson with an elbow over the top. And again on the break. Waterson with a head kick. Herrig runs in to clinch again but leads right into a Waterson head-and-arm throw. Waterson lands hard with punches and an elbow from half guard. Shoulder checks from Waterson. Old school. Waterson with a few punches to the body, enough to maintain position. Herrig regains full guard with 50 seconds to go. Body lock from the bottom for Herrig. Waterson moves her over to the cage. Herrig almost bucks her off but Waterson maintains control. She stands, then almost fell into a triangle. 10-9 Waterson.

Round 3 - Herrig with a front kick and she rushes into the clinch against the cage. She lands a hard left hook as Waterson scoots away. Leg kick from Herrig. Waterson digs under and went for a takedown, but Herrig deftly reverses it. Waterson immediately looks for an armbar but can’t get anywhere. So she unloads with elbows instead. Herrig trying to stay active from the top but isn’t landing flush. Waterson is being more effective with her striking from her back so far. Waterson briefly secures an omoplata, but Herri works out of it. The ref stands them up with 2:10 to go. Waterson looks for an immediate takedown but couldn’t get it. Herrig presses her against the fence. She secures a body lock but can’t drag Waterson down. They separate. 1:15 to go. Herrig lands to the body. Waterson with the oblique kick. Waterson shoots but is stood up. Knees from Herrig, and a left hook. Waterson with a front kick to the face that gets a reaction from the crowd. More clinching. Waterson with an elbow. Herrig with knees. Waterson with a knee too. 10-9 and 30-27 Waterson.
