UFC 229 results: Derrick Lewis miraculously knocks out Alexander Volkov

Dominated for most of the fight, Derrick Lewis scored a dramatic KO win vs. Alexander Volkov with seconds remaining in the final round.

The second fight on the UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor pay-per-view main card pitted heavyweight knockout artist Derrick Lewis against Russian contender Alexander Volkov. In an absolutely incredible sequence of events, Lewis overcame a badly busted up left eye, a lopsided strike differential, and getting hurt multiple times over to flatten Volkov with his vaunted power in the closing seconds of the third-round. There were only 11 seconds remaining, so had he not gotten the finish, he’d have lost a decision. Instead, Lewis has won three straight, and Volkov’s six-fight win streak comes to a stunning end.

Volkov hurt Lewis with a front kick to the body in the opening minute, and he searched for the finish right away. Lewis tried fighting back but Volkov dodged Lewis’ haymakers. Lewis had a problem with his eye after getting rocked again, and the fight abruptly stopped as Lewis turned away in pain. The fight restarted after that bizarre sequence, as there was no eyepoke at all. Volkov attacked the body again upon the restart, then Lewis went of a bizarre takedown which backfired. They got back to their feet and Lewis clocked the Russian with a massive right hand, but Volkov toughed it out and secured a takedown, landing elbows from side control to the head and body. Volkov took Lewis’ back with a minute to go in the round, but Lewis reversed position with 20 seconds left and he went to work with his trademark lethal ground-and-pound to cap off a crazy round. In case you’re wondering, replays showed that Lewis’ eye troubles were caused by a legal punch.

Round two started with Volkov popping Lewis with the jab and teeing off with combination punching to the head as Lewis was both hurt and looking fatigued. Lewis’ left eye was swollen badly. Volkov mostly took his time and didn’t want to get too wild and get caught by a Lewis haymaker. Alexander started throwing more kicks to the head, legs, and body of “The Black Beast” as the round progressed. Volkov’s mouthpiece fell out during an exchange, and he got the fight stopped so that he could put it back in before the round ended.

Down two rounds, Lewis clearly needed a dramatic KO in order to get the comeback win. Volkov pushed out his jab as Lewis again went for a takedown and it failed miserably. Volkov hurt Lewis yet again with an onslaught of punches, further damaging that left eye. He even threw some body punches in the ensuing flurry as Lewis was searching for answers and surviving at the same time. A hard leg kick buckled Lewis with just over two minutes to go. Volkov just did whatever he wanted at a methodical pace, and Lewis’ forays forward to throw knockout blows grew desperate. With thirty seconds left, Lewis needed a miracle. A left hook landed, as did a massive right hand that caused Volkov to collapse. “The Black Beast” uncorked a series of right hands on the ground that sent Volkov to sleep. Absolutely astonishing scenes.

Official result: Derrick Lewis def. Alexander Volkov by KO (punches) at 4:49 of round 3
