UFC 229 results and highlights: Formiga shuts down Pettis, Luque demolishes Turner

Closing out the UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor preliminary card, Vicente Luque scored another KO win, while Jussier Formiga made his case for a flyweight title shot.

The UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor preliminary card is now complete, and as fans look forward to the pay-per-view main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, the prelims have been quite entertaining. Welterweight Vicente Luque took apart the promising but inexperienced Jalin Turner with a vicious first-round KO, while Jussier Formiga took a comfortable decision over Sergio Pettis to perhaps (at long last) cement a flyweight title shot. Here’s how the fights played out.

Jussier Formiga def. Sergio Pettis by unanimous decision (30-26, 29-28, 29-28) - Flyweights

Formiga was surprisingly getting the better of Pettis in the striking department in the early stages, then the BJJ black belt tried to take Pettis down and failed to do so on the first attempt. However, Formiga shot in again and put Pettis on his back. It was no doubt an encouraging first-round for Formiga.

Fans were a bit annoyed at the lack of action during round two, as Pettis stopped a Formiga takedown but it was largely a tepid kickboxing match. A bodylock takedown by Formiga proved successful, and Pettis was unable to get up until three seconds left in the round. Formiga wasn’t really close to a submission or anything threatening, but it looked like he was in control of things.

Formiga sought a single-leg takedown early in the third round, then scrambled and took the back of Pettis, which is usually doom whenever that happens. Formiga also had a body triangle while draped over a standing Pettis. The Brazilian went for a rear-naked choke but didn’t get it. He just stayed on Pettis’ back for several minutes and throwing punches to the head and body. Pettis was simply stuck, and a late shakeoff attempt by Sergio was unsuccessful. It’s Formiga’s third straight victory, while Pettis’ title shot hopes take a huge hit.

Vicente Luque def. Jalin Turner by KO (punches) at 3:52 of round 1 - Welterweights

Turner fired off his jab from southpaw stance with regularity, as the highly touted prospect looked to pull off a major upset. Luque answered back with a right-left combination. He often looked to tag Turner with the left hook, and did so off the counter. Turner threw a flying knee that was blocked, and he ate another counter shot seconds later. A spinning elbow by Turner landed, but Luque dropped the Dana White’s Contender Series signing with a right hand and then rendered him unconscious with disgustingly violent left hands. Luque extends his winning streak to three, while handing Turner a UFC debut loss.
