Conor McGregor likes to talk about his “options,” and for a star as big as he is, there really are a lot of lucrative bouts regardless if he wins or loses this upcoming bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Of course McGregor believes he’s coming out of UFC 229 with a victory, and he recently spoke about what he would like the next bout to be.
“I’m certainly considering a few options,” McGregor told ESPN. “There’s this fight and the co-main (Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis). Of course then there’s boxing ventures. I’m very excited about that.”
The former two-division champion spoke about Floyd Mayweather as a possibility, as well as a trilogy with Diaz that will eventually happen down the road “no matter what happens.”
When asked about another major draw in Georges St-Pierre though, McGregor instead suggested a different name. He didn’t seem too keen on facing GSP immediately after this bout, but did suggest a bout against Anderson Silva.
“We’ll see what happens, but I don’t think (GSP is) next,” he said. “He doesn’t really have anything for me personally. I’m not going to shut the door on that down the line. You know what would be another great one? Anderson Silva.
”I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout. I swear to God. Anderson is a legend in the game. What’s the difference between him and Georges? Same damn thing. I’m going to do fights that interest me or have meaning.”
Apart from being a far bigger draw than Silva, St-Pierre also recently slimmed down and suggested he can do a catchweight or even drop to lightweight. Silva on the other hand, hasn’t found much success inside or outside of the cage lately. While the 43-year-old has had a storied career, the former middleweight champ has fought as high as light heavyweight, and has had more suspensions (last one was due to a tainted supplement) than wins in the last five years.
Whether it’s size, or where they are at this point in their careers, a bout against a fellow two-division champ in GSP certainly makes a lot more sense. As McGregor mentioned though, at the end of the day, he holds the cards, and a lot of the decision making really would boil down to who interests him personally.
