David Branch was far from thrilled when he discovered he was without an opponent after scheduled opponent Yoel Romero accepted a UFC interim title fight against Luke Rockhold — especially because he found out in the wee hours of the morning when he got up to use the washroom.
UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker pulled out of his first title defense against Rockhold, planned for Perth’s UFC 221 in February, due to multiple injuries. Taking the titleholder’s place was Romero, who was booked to face former WSOF champ Branch at UFC on FOX 28 two weeks later in Orlando.
Branch posted a video on Instagram early Saturday morning with his reaction to the news. Branch, who doesn’t know what will happen with his spot on the Feb. 24 card, was visibly disappointed.
“I just got up to take a f—king piss, and I found out about all this s—t right now,” Branch said. “I’ve been training my f—king ass off. I’m away from my family right now, sleeping in the f—king gym — sleeping in my gym. F—k, man, damn. Things happen. We get injured sometimes. These guys are all real fighters. This is the nature of the business.
“I was just really stoked to fight Yoel. Really excited to right some wrongs in my last fight. These things happen. I’m going to be back in the Octagon soon, guys. I don’t know against who. I guess I’m just going to go home and sleep now. I don’t know what’s going on. This s—t is crazy.”
Branch is 1-1 in the UFC since returning to the premier MMA promotion after a successful, two-division title stint in WSOF. He defeated Krzysztof Jotko in a narrow decision at UFC 211 last May, but fell short by submission to Rockhold last September.
The UFC has not yet commented on what will happen with Branch. It is not yet clear whether he will remain on the UFC on FOX 28 card, which is still without a main event and takes place at Amway Center.
