Paulie Malignaggi still gunning for fight with Conor McGregor: I’ll fight him for ‘free’

The May-Mac saga might be over, but former two-weight boxing world champion Paulie Malignaggi still has beef with Conor McGregor.

The rivalry started last December when Malignaggi mocked McGregor for considering a temporary switch to boxing, telling ‘The Notorious’ that he could beat him with one arm tied behind his back.

Things escalated when McGregor, 29, invited Malignaggi to the UFC performance institute as a sparring partner and posted photos of their training session. One of the photos appeared to show Malignaggi knocked to the canvas, and the 36-year-old swiftly left camp and launched a trash talking campaign against McGregor on social media.

Now that the dust has settled from Aug. 26, the night that saw McGregor lost to ‘The Best Ever’ at Nevada’s T-Mobile Arena, Malignaggi has started campaigning for his own boxing match with the UFC lightweight champion.

The former champ retired earlier this year but is willing to fight McGregor in the boxing ring for ‘free’.

“I’m willing to risk fighting him for free just to punch him in the mouth again, again and again,” Malignaggi told Ariel Helwani in a recent edition of The MMA Hour, per MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi. “That’s how confident I am he can’t beat me. I’d make it winner take all just for the pleasure of putting my fist in his teeth again.”

McGregor, who was stopped by ‘Money’ in the 10th round, posted snippets of his sparring footage with Malignaggi and promised to release the full video in the aftermath of the Mayweather bout. That footage hasn’t been released yet, but expect it to drop in the coming days/weeks.

Malignaggi called McGregor a ‘punk’ and believes he’s capable of stopping the Irishman in the boxing ring.

“Conor gets stopped by me,” he said. “If Conor doesn’t get stopped by me, I should get penalized at least a portion of my purse if I don’t stop this guy.

“I think once you get the hang of it, once you get the hang of what Conor is doing, you start to break him. And as I’ve said from the start, this guy is not the bravest guy in the world. There’s a lot of punk in this guy. He’s a loud guy, he’s a brash guy. Honestly, in MMA he has the advantage most of the time, because he is talented. You have to give him that, he is talented. But a fighter is a fighter when faced with adversity. Not in round one, not when he’s talking at a press conference.”

McGregor looks set to return to the UFC to defend his lightweight title but a grudge match against Malignaggi — especially for the right price — could lure the MMA champ back into the squared circle.
