Ray Borg: I don’t need a nutritionist, I’m just going to do what I’ve done before

Flyweight title challenger Ray Borg says he won’t be using a nutritionist to help with his weight cut for UFC 216.

UFC 215 wasn’t poised to break any PPV records, but it had a respectable bout roster that included not one, but two title bouts. Unfortunately, Ray Borg—one half of the flyweight title bought—was forced to pull out of the fight due to illness just one day before the event. There was rampant speculation that his weight cut had gone sideways, mainly because of his past issues with the dreaded scale.

In the weeks since the card, Borg didn’t offer much explanation, but this past Monday, he finally broke his silence on the MMA Hour. During the interview, he denied having issues making the cut down to 125, and further stated that he didn’t need any outside help from any of the nutrition experts that specialize in this area. “I found myself in a weird predicament,” Borg said on The MMA Hour. “I found myself wanting to just do what I did to get to the show. When I got to the UFC, UFC fights prior, I knew my body more than any nutritionist did. No matter how many nutritionists I’ve worked with, I know how my body reacts to certain things and I know the way I can cut weight the easiest, the best, and the fastest. I tried to complicate things by adding in too many people just to make things easier throughout my career. So as of right now, I’m just doing what got me to the show, doing what I used to do with a little bit of guidance from the nutritionist for the UFC Performance Institute. So, just consulting with him, he’s going to just kinda monitor everything, make sure I’m doing everything right and I make sure I stay on my food, make sure the biggest thing is recovery after training, things like that. But other than that, right now, where my weight’s at, I don’t need a nutritionist. I’m just going to do what I’ve done before.”

Borg’s fight with flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has been rescheduled for October 7 at UFC 216 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will not, however, be the main event, instead serving as the co-main event to an interim title bout between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee.
