UFC 213: Romero vs. Whittaker prelims live results, discussion, play by play

Live, blow-by-blow updates for today's UFC 213 preliminary card, which features a heavyweight bout between Travis Browne and Oleksiy Oliynyk as the featured bout.

Tonight's main event was supposed to see Amanda Nunes defending her women’s bantamweight title against Valentina Shevchenko, but that bout is now off due to a Nunes illness. The new main event is for the interim middleweight title, with Yoel Romero facing Robert Whittaker.

This post will cover the preliminary card. The featured bout of the prelims comes in the heavyweight division, with Travis Browne taking on Oleksiy Oliynyk.

The prelims kick off at approximately 7pm ET/4pm PT with two bouts on UFC Fight Pass. They then move over to FS1 at 8pm ET/5pm PT for the other four prelims bouts. The five-fight PPV kicks off at the normal starting time of 10pm ET/7pm PT, and are covered in a separate post. The full lineup and schedule follows. Travis Browne vs. Aleksei Oleinik

Round 1 - Head kick from Browne. And to the body. Oleinik lands over the top. Browne with a hard knee to the chest. Head kick. Outside leg kick. Oleinik ties him up against the cage. They battle in the clinch. They separate and Browne drops Oleinik with a big shot! Oleinik back up. Left hook from Browne. Oleinik landed a left hook of his own. Jab from both. Wild right hook drops Browne! He gets right back up though. Body shots from Oleinik to the body. Oleinik clinching up against hte cage. Oleinik to the head and body when Browne gets some separation. Browne with a knee up the middle. Oleinik with a takedown off of a caught kick. Straight to side control. He takes the back. Okeinik flattens him out and looks for a choke. Some short punches to the face. 10-9 Oleinik.

Round 2 - Oleinik with a winging right. They clinch up briefly and Browne lands a knee to the belly. Head kick from Browne wobbles Oleinik. Oleinik clinches up and lands body shots. Browne looking for the Thai clinch. Browne with knees to the body. Browne throws Oleinik to the ground but almost gave up position. Browne passes to side. Oleinik landing short punches. Browne trying to figure out what to do. Oleinik up with a body lock and drags him down with back control. Hammerfists. Oleinik rolls through with hooks. Body scissors and looking for a choke. Browne taps! Not even sure what he tapped to. A modified choke?

Brian Camozzi vs. Chad Laprise

Round 1 - Inside leg kick from Laprise. Camozzi responded with his own. Big overhand right from Laprise. Camozzi does the same. Outside leg kick from Laprise. Body kick from Camozzi. Laprise caught a leg kick and scored with a left hook. Nice lead right from Laprise. Laprise with some nice inside counters too. Inside leg kick from the anadian. Laprise working the body as well. Hard outside leg kick from Laprise. Nice left right hook from Camozzi. Nice combo from Laprise. Head kick from Camozzi.Laprise staying busy. Spinning back kick. Laprise caught a kick and put Camozzi on his back. 10-9 Laprise.

Round 2 - Head kick from Laprise. Camozzi fired back but his was blocked. Leg kick by Camozzi. Laprise with a nice right, Camozzi comes up short with the counter. Body kick from Camozzi. Nice step-in left hook from Laprise. Camozzi is pressing but Laprise is circling out well. Jab from Camozzi. Nice right over the top from Camozzi. Camozzi with a counter left. Camozzi with a nice right at the end of a combo. Laprise with a sneaky left hook. Camozzi with a body kick. Another. Inside leg kick from Laprise. Camozzi responds with an outside leg kick. Laprise trying to pressure late. Lands a kick. 10-9 Camozzi.

Round 3 - Triple jab from Camozzi. Outside leg kick too. Laprise with a nice right. Laprise checks a kick. More jabs. Laprise trying to to step it up. Laprise with a body shot that hurts Camozzi! Liver shot! He jumped all over him and pounded him against the cage. Camozzi went down and it’s over. That was nasty.

Gerald Meerschaert vs. Thiago Santos

Round 1 - Leg kick from Santos trips Meerschaert right as he was going for a takedown. Meerschaert with a takedown but Santos is right back up. He ties Santos up against the cage and landed some hard lefts. Meerschaert looking for another takedown against the cage but he eats a bunch of shots and gets a bloody nose. Santos has a cut on his head. Santos really opened up with strikes and had Meerschaert in big trouble. He recovered though, and Santos made him stand up. Then poked him in the eye. Bad timing. Meerschaert wisely using the time to recover. Santos with a nice punch and a knee to the body. He tripped him with a kick again. Santos with a left hook. Two more lead lefts as Meerschaert retreats. Meerschaert looking to walk Santos down now. Santos fires at the bell. 10-9 Santos.

Round 2 - Meerschaert immediately shoots but can’t put Santos on his back. He tries again and grabs a leg, but eats a ton of hammerfists and punches. He turtles up and continues to take shots. Santos looking for an arm-triangle choke. He takes the back and lands some hard hammerfists to the head instead. Santos lands a knee to the body as Meerschaert gets to his feet. He’s back down though. He’s basically just turtling again. He was blocking the punches but wasn’t doing anything at all. The ref finally steps in.

Jordan Mein vs. Belal Muhammad

Round 1 - Muhammad has a takedown stuffed. Mein with an outside leg kick. Big right hook from Muhammad. Another takedown stuffed. Outside leg kick from Mein again. Body kick from Muhmamad, two low kicks from Mein. Good lead left from Muhammad. Body kick from Mein. Another takedown stuffed, but Muhammad landed a body kick. Nice right from Muhammad. A couple of lefts score for Muhammad. Mein sticking to leg kicks. Muhammad with a body lock. Nice elbow from Muhammad in the clinch. 10-9 Muhammad.

Round 2 - Mein was busted open by that last elbow in the first round. Mein threatens with a takedown. The cut is right over his left eye on his forehead. Muhammad clinches up. Muhammad with a takedown but Mein slips away immediately. Mein with a hard counter straight right. Mein digs to the body. Mein throwing a bunch of low kicks. Muhammad with a jab and a body shot. Two straight lefts from Muhammad. Mein has a takedown attempt stuffed. Muhammad can’t get a takedown so he clinches up against the cage. He secured a body lock and threw Mein to the mat. 10-9 Muhammad.

Round 3 - Muhammad clinches up again immediately and eventually gets a takedown. Mein looked for a kimura but lost it. Muhammad jumps back on him. He takes his back and works on the ground. He secures a body triangle and looks for a choke. Lots of body shots. Mein is back to his feet but Muhammad is still on him. Mein just can’t get loose. Mein goes for a kimura again but Muhammad easily escapes. Mein looking for top position but settles for clinch work. He’s exhausted. 10-9 and 30-27 Muhammad.

Belal Muhammad defeated Jordan Mein by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Cody Stamann vs. Terrion Ware

Round 1 - Stamann with a lead right hook. Ware with a leg kick. Stamann with a left and a knee up the middle. Ware with a leg kick and a lead right. Stamann charges in with strikes and gets a takedown. Ware didn’t stay down long. Ware with a combo against the cage and scoops a single leg briefly. Ball shot. Cornuts cam? Yup, ball shot. Short break. Ware with a jab and a short right. Outside leg kick. Body shot. Stamann with a takedown. He worked from the top for a while but never got anything going. 10-9 Ware.

Round 2 - Stamann with a leg kick. He lands a nice knee and points at Ware. Ware lands one right back. He tried to attack again but gets taken down. Ware gets up after about 45 seconds. Stamann flurries with a combo. Ware backs him up and lands to the body. Stamann may have been hurt by the multiple body shots there. Stamann with a takedown again. Ware up after about 20 seconds. Right hook from Ware. Ware stuffs a takedown attempt. Body shot from Ware, but he gets double-legged to the mat. He rides out the round there. 10-9 Stamann.

Round 3 - Side kick to the knee from Stamann. Overhand right from Ware. Front kick from Stamann, and he laughs and points at Ware like “I got you!”. Stamann with a body kick and a left. Ware caught a kick. Stamann digs to the body. Ware responds. They trade rights. Ware walking him down. Stamann fakes a shot, eats two punches, then lands a blast double-leg. Ware trying to get up against the cage but gives up his back. Stamann comes back around and mounts him against the cage. Stamann is trying to punch him but Ware is locking him down. Now he’s landing. Ware back to his feet but Stamann still has his back with a body lock. They brawl to the horn before Stamann double-legs him again. 10-9 and 29-28 Stamann. 30-27 wouldn’t surprise me either.

Cody Stamann defeated Terrion Ware by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

James Bochnovic vs. Trevin Giles

Round 1 - Bochnovic lands a body kick. Giles gets a takedown. He’s working against the cage. He stands up. Bochnovic looking for an armbar from the bottom. Giles deftly avoids it. Bochnovic trying a few other things but can’t get anything going. He finally gets up, but is immediately slammed back down and eats a few big punches. Giles standing up, dropping big elbows, and doing it over and over. 10-9 Giles.

Round 2 - Giles with a jab. He scores a takedown. Bochnovic initiated a scramble, but Giles put him right back down. He moved to mount. Bochnovic gave up his back and he’s eating big shots. The fight is over.
