While July 29th was predominantly focused on UFC 214, fans in Belfast, Northern Ireland were anticipating the return of local hero, former super-bantamweight and featherweight champion Carl Frampton (23-1, 14 KOs). “The Jackal” was set for a WBC title eliminator bout against Andres Gutierrez (35-1-1, 25 KOs) in the main event of a card set to be shown on free-to-air television network Channel 5.

At Friday’s weigh-ins, while Gutierrez made weight without issue, Frampton came in over the featherweight (126 lbs) limit, which nullified the fight’s “title eliminator” status. Nevertheless, the main event was still on for Saturday night ... until it wasn’t. Hours later, Cyclone Promotions announced the show’s cancellation after Gutierrez had injured himself.

"We're all so disappointed. It was a freak accident,” Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan said (via BBC). "He slipped in the shower, smashed his face, the guy is concussed. He has a deep gash on his chin, his nose, lost two of his teeth."

An additional source told The Telegraph more details on Gutierrez’s shower mishap: “He slipped and hit the tap under his chin, which flipped him over, and he fell on his face on the bottom of the shower. Andres was knocked unconscious and when he woke up, he was in a pool of blood.”

The two sides are working on rescheduling the contest after an unfortunate and bizarre turn of events. This is pretty much boxing’s version of Tim Meansinfamous sauna slip the night before he was supposed to fight on a UFC on FOX card back in 2012.
