On the main card of UFC 214 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday night, former welterweight champ Robbie Lawler got back on track in a highly-anticipated clash against Donald Cerrone.

“Ruthless” had an incredible start to the three-round matchup. Lawler came out swinging as soon as the opening bell sounded, possibly throwing “Cowboy” off guard. Lawler hurt Cerrone pretty badly, but the veteran’s chin held up in the opening exchanges. The latter half of the first round was back and forth; it included lots of dirty boxing and clinch exchanges between the two top contenders, and Cerrone landed several kicks to Lawler. Cerrone also scored a takedown just over the half way mark of the round, but he didn’t deliver much offense with the dominant position.

Cerrone clearly scored big in the second round. It was almost as if Lawler took the round off to preserve energy for the final round. Cerrone landed a variety of kicks, knees, and punches and perhaps started to confuse the ex-titleholder. Lawler was very tentative throughout the round, but didn’t appear too fatigued.

In the third round, Lawler came out much more aggressive, and landed several solid kicks and punches to Cerrone’s body, which is infamously weak. Whenever Lawler was the hunt, he was winning. When he was stepping backwards, Cerrone was mixing it up and scoring points.

The fight ended with both fighters landing shots, but Lawler got the better of Cerrone — ever so slightly — in the third round.

Official result: Robbie Lawler def. Donald Cerrone by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Lawler rebounded from a title loss to champ Tyron Woodley last year. Cerrone has now lost two in a row.
