When the talk of Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Conor McGregor seemed like little more than a pipe dream, Dana White put an offer on the table to get the bout made, $25 million-a-piece. To those unfamiliar with Mayweather’s past earning potential, it seemed like an ungodly amount of money (and for most it still is). But, to Floyd $25 million was entirely a laughing matter.
Mayweather claimed he hadn’t made as little as $25 million for a fight in the last decade, and then took aim at the author of the deal. “Dana White, I remember when you used to carry my bags.”
A few months, a firmly negotiated deal, and a World Media Tour appear to have changed the tune, however. This past Wednesday, July 12th, during the MayMac World Tour stop in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Mayweather extended an olive branch to the UFC president (transcript via MMA Fighting).
“Dana, I could never disrespect you,” Mayweather said on stage. “I’ve known you for 21 years. You’ve done a hell of a job with this company. And I want to continue to watch you grow. I want to watch you continue to build the UFC, because it’s all about combat sports. You’ve done a hell of a job. No matter what I’ve said about you in the past, as a man I look in your face and apologize and tell you I’m sorry. But you’ve done a hell of a job with this company.”
‘Money’ elaborated on his statement to press, backstage, as well.
“Dana White used to come over my house every day,” Mayweather said. “I’ve been knowing Dana White 21 years. I’m big enough to apologize to Dana White. I’m a real man, that’s what real men do. I’m man enough to apologize. I’ve said some stuff about Dana. I’m only human. He takes shots at me; I take shots back. I’m only human. I’m not upset with Dana White, I’m not upset with anybody.”
It’s a strange moment in what will likely continue to be a highly antagonistic pre-fight buildup between Mayweather and the UFC’s own PPV star, Conor McGregor. The tour makes its next stop at the Barclays center in Brooklyn, NY, before heading overseas to Wembley Stadium in London, England. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for more news and updates.
