Yoel Romero is fighting for (interim) UFC middleweight gold next week against Robert Whittaker. When the Cuban first entered the Octagon, he was coming off of a KO loss to Rafael Cavalcante in Strikeforce. Romero made the decision to drop to middleweight for his UFC debut against Clifford Starks on April 20th, 2013 at UFC on FOX 7.
While Romero has made a name for himself by finishing his opponents in round 3, Starks barely lasted 90 seconds into round 1. A brutal flying knee and punches put Starks away in what was the opening fight on the Facebook prelims. You can watch the full video at the top of the page.
Here’s Brent Brookhouse’s play-by-play of the fight:
Round 1 - Romero moving around and throwing leg kicks, Starks with a hard right hand. Romero with a kick to the head now and he gets stiffed by Starks on a takedown attempt. Flying knee right as Starks was bending and now Romero follows up with a series of hard punches and it's over. Yoel Romero wins by TKO (flying knee and punches), Round 1.
