Oscar De La Hoya really brought the promotional heat today. The Golden Boy CEO is set to promote one of the biggest bouts in a while when his charge Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez meets the king of boxing’s middleweight division, Gennady Golovkin, in September, and he has some lofty expectations for it.
When speaking to Fight Hub, he confirmed that the location of the fight is down to two cities, and gave his thoughts on how many pay-per-views the fight would sell. It’s classic Oscar being Oscar (transcribed by Bad Left Hook):
“With the heavyweight division being back with Anthony Joshua, you know with the Keith Thurman fight that was viewed by what, more than 5 million people on prime time TV, with Canelo-Chavez selling over a million homes — we’re expecting close to 3 million with Golovkin and Canelo in September. These are the types of fights that bring boxing back, and that’s exactly my mission - is to bring boxing back, bring back that excitement that people used to live for when watching boxing.”
The fight will take place in either Dallas (ie. AT&T Stadium) or Las Vegas according to De La Hoya:
“It’s between Dallas and Las Vegas so I have my meetings set already, all this week and next week, and hopefully I can have an answer for you in a few days.”
The idea that this fight could do anywhere near three million buys is almost comical. While Canelo’s last fight against Julio Cesar Chavez did better than expected with around one million buys, Golovkin has struggled as a PPV draw so far. His two bouts as the A-side drew 150k and 170k respectively. Canelo’s biggest draw to date was against the mighty Floyd Mayweather in 2013, which did 2.2 million.
The PPV record for buys was Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao in 2015, which came it at 4.6 million.
This wasn’t his only promotional statement of the day either. In addition to this, Oscar put up a spirited Facebook post attempting to convince fans that the chief competitor for PPV buys around the same time period - a boxing match between Mayweather and the UFC’s Conor McGregor - is a farce and shouldn’t be purchased.
