Saturday’s boxing main event is the latest in a series of excellently matched fights this year. This one is a US vs UK event that sees Welterweight champion Kell Brook taking on fast-rising contender Errol Spence, Jr. Here are the latest odds, courtesy of Bovada:
Errol Spence Jr. -225
Kell Brook +175
These are tight odds, which is no surprise at all. Between the two men, there is only 1 loss, and that was Brook’s loss when he moved up two weight classes to take on Gennady Golovkin. Both are undefeated at this weight, and both have shown themselves to be clear top level talents. As the champion, Brook has the better resume, and he’s beaten a higher caliber of fighter with his 2014 victory over Shawn Porter standing as a career highlight. Spence has yet to face an opponent of Brook’s level, but he has been steadily moving up the ranks, and has looked absolutely incredible in all of his fights. He’s the favorite here, but that is based on his skills and potential more than actual evidence of him beating a fighter like Kell Brook.
That said, Spence is my pick in this fight. Not a super confident pick, but still he’s who I am behind here. Spence has KO’d the significant majority of his opponents, but again, he’s never been in there with a Kell Brook. If he can both win and get the KO it will be a huge statement - it’s possible he makes that statement Saturday, but I don’t feel confident enough to put money down on either man at these odds.
Also taking place on the same card is George Groves vs. Fedor Chudinov in a fight that Showtime will stream on their YouTube page. Groves is the favorite there at -450 to Chudinov at +325.
And for those looking ahead to boxing’s upcoming big fights, GGG is currently favored over Canelo -165 to +135; Andre Ward is over Sergey Kovalev -160 to +130; and of course, Floyd Mayweather now sits at -800 to Conor McGregor at +500.
