USADA suspends Gastelum for three months, July UFC on Fox bout with Weidman possible

Kelvin Gastelum paid a heavy price for his in-competition positive drug test for marijuana following his win over Vitor Belfort in Brazil in March. The bout has been flipped to a No Contest, and the subsequent provisional suspension forced him out of a high-profile bout with Anderson Silva at UFC 212. But it turns out that the actual suspension handed down by USADA wasn’t very lengthy at all.

In a statement from USADA today, they announced that Gastelum had been suspended for three months. It was originally six months, but it was cut in half after the TUF 17 winner completed an “approved drug awareness and management program”.

This leaves him eligible to return on June 11th, and it looks like the UFC is interested in booking him not long after that - at UFC on Fox 25 in July, to be exact. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani stated the promotion’s intentions for him, which is a bout with Chris Weidman:

Gastelum (13-2, 1 NC, 8-2, 1 NC UFC) was handed the same three-month suspension by the Brazilian commission earlier this week, along with being fined 20% of his fight purse. Weidman (13-3, 9-3 UFC) is on a three-fight losing streak, the last of which coming in very controversial fashion to Gegard Mousasi last month.
