After much confusion and controversy over whether or not Pearl Gonzalez was going to fight Cynthia Calvillo at UFC 210: Cormier vs. Johnson 2 in Buffalo, New York, Gonzalez was cleared to compete just before Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins. As for the actual fight, Gonzalez was no match for Calvillo’s grappling chops.
Calvillo was the far more active offensive fighter in the first round. Effective jabbing and sharp combinations. A knee to the body by Calvillo was followed up with a front head lock. At the end of the round, Calvillo tried to take Gonzalez’s back while on the mat, but then switched things up and went for the triangle choke. Gonzalez was saved by the horn sounding.
Gonzalez got a much-needed takedown into full mount early in round two, but Calvillo’s scrambling abilities were absolutely fantastic. She escaped mount and reversed position after fending off the armbar. Calvillo then took Gonzalez’s back and threatened to finish Gonzalez with a rear-naked choke, but Gonzalez avoided the worst possible outcome. Calvillo kept outgrappling her opponent and was often in dominant positions.
Gonzalez was overmatched on the mat. She was taken down once more in the final round, which spelled the beginning of the end for her. Calvillo advanced to full mount, then back mount, and after failing to get the rear-naked choke the first time, she made Gonzalez tap on the next attempt. It’s two wins in two UFC fights for Calvillo. Gonzalez loses for just the second time in her career.
Official result: Cynthia Calvillo def. Pearl Gonzalez by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:45 of round 3
