Main Card (Spike, 9 PM ET)
Bellator featherweight title: Daniel Straus (24-6) vs. Patricio Freire (25-4)
Round 1: Dan Miragliotta gets the fight underway. Big straight right by Pitbull. Leg kick by Straus. The champ misses high with the head kick. Another right by Pitbull and he gets out of the way of a Straus left hand. Good kick by Patricio. Straus with a left hand and he pushes forward and is trying to get the takedown. Pitbull reverses and puts him against the fence. They’re locked up and not much offense is happening. Sharp knee to the body by Pitbull. Good takedown defense by the Brazilian. Miragliotta separates them after the prolonged stalemate. Another good body kick by Pitbull, who had the better offense to start this fight. 10-9 Pitbull.
Round 2: Straus with another takedown attempt after strikes were exchanged. More great defending by Pitbull. He’s got control of Straus’ neck and jumps on the guillotine. Freire pulls guard and Straus taps IMMEDIATELY! Patricio Pitbull has got his belt back!
Official result: Patricio Freire def. Daniel Straus by submission (guillotine choke) at :37 of round 2 to become the Bellator featherweight champion
Women’s flyweights: Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (5-0) vs. Jessica Middleton (2-0)
Round 1: Good right hand lands for Middleton early. Macfarlane drives forward for a takedown but Middleton defends it well. Middleton elbows Macfarlane and end up on the mat. Macfarlane with elbows from half-guard. Knee was on the right arm of Middleton and leaving her prone to strikes. Macfarlane has full mount and she steps over to go for the armbar. That looks tight. Middleton is squirming and doing everything she can to wriggle free. Macfarlane adjusts and this time Middleton taps! Terrific performance by Ilima-Lei Macfarlane.
Official result: Ilima-Lei Macfarlane def. Jessica Middleton by submission (armbar) at 2:15 of round 1
Lightweights: Saad Awad (19-9) vs. Ryan Quinn (13-6)
Round 1: Awad misses with a head kick and then clips Quinn with a short right hand that stuns his opponent and makes him shoot for a takedown. Big knee by Awad on the way up and also a hard right hand. He is timing Quinn well. Awad stuffs the takedown and then in the ensuing scramble he takes Quinn’s back and lands elbows. Looks like Awad is going for the armbar but loses position and they’re back to their feet. Wild whiff from Awad and this time Quinn completes the takedown against the fence. Awad sweeps and get to his feet, but then eats a knee and drops back down. Quinn goes for a guillotine and transitions to the anaconda choke. Awad rotates his body and he’s out. They exchange strikes and are now clinched against the fence. Quinn changes levels and grabs a leg but is taking hammerfists and elbows to the head. Awad lands a body kick on the way back up. Good right by Quinn, who swarms Awad and is in on a double and gets him down. Quinn takes the back but can’t do much because time expires. 10-9 Awad.
Round 2: Quinn can’t get the right hand to connect. He’s able to put Awad on his back and now advanced to the back, but Awad wriggles free of the hooks. Quinn bides his time and gets the back again but with only one hook in. Both hooks in and he’s searching for a rear-naked choke. Awad is handfighting and Quinn loses back mount and has to bail on a kimura. Awad on top but taking some elbows from the bottom. Saad fires punches back in return. Good ground-and-pound by Awad and now there’s space for him to get back up, but instead he winds up on the bottom again as Quinn pushes him down. Oh and Quinn loses top position and Awad returns to elbowing his foe. Awad goes back into Quinn’s guard and unleashes some elbows with Quinn’s right arm trapped. Side control for Awad and he may have the mounted crucifix here. He doesn’t but he does get full mount. He rains down strikes to end the round. 10-9 Awad and 20-18 Awad overall.
Round 3: Awad comes out flicking the jab. Quinn with a leg kick. Another takedown by Quinn and he takes the back and aggressively goes for the rear-naked choke but Awad fights the hands and he’s frankly too high on the back. They’re back to their feet. Punches are exchanged before Quinn again shoots for a takedown and sure enough he’s the one on bottom. Ground-and-pound by Awad as Quinn can’t set up an armbar or a triangle. Two minutes to go and Quinn is in danger of getting his back taken. It’s back to striking we go and they both land knees to the body. Awad’s corner wants him off the fence. Quinn can’t muscle him down and once again Awad is able to get on top. Desperation guillotine from Quinn but there’s nothing there and Awad beats him up more. Twenty seconds to go and Quinn has been mounted. Awad is trying to submit him late but Quinn isn’t in danger and the fight ends. I have it 10-9 Awad and 30-27 Awad overall.
Official result: Saad Awad def. Ryan Quinn by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
Featherweights: A.J. McKee (7-0) vs. Dominic Mazzotta (12-1)
Round 1: Body kick by Mazzotta. McKee with a side kick. McKee with a flurry of punches that backs Mazzotta up and he covers up well. McKee just annihilated Mazzotta with a head kick and he is absolutely out cold! Mazzotta even partially blocked it and he still got destroyed.
