How many times have you looked over the fight footage of Fedor Emelianenko and thought to yourself, ‘He’s a terminator,’ only to immediately dismiss it as fiction because there are no killer robots hunting down the resistance…right?? Well, Russia has changed the narrative of reality, and now, Fedor is a robot killing machine capable of firing a gun from either hand, lifting weights, opening doors, screwing in light bulbs and can even drive a car.
Russia’s deputy prime minister in charge of their defense and space industry, Dmitry Rogozin, took to Twitter to reveal the humanoid robot F.E.D.O.R. (Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research), as reported by Tass.com this past weekend. The bot is being developed by Android Technics and the Advanced Research Fund under an assignment issued from Russia’s Emergencies Ministry.
“Fedor is referred to the AR-700 series (for work in extreme conditions). The enterprise also produces AR-600 household robots. It takes for the enterprise’s specialists about 16 hours to assemble one Fedor and up to 2-3 hours to replace an item in the android, the chief executive said.
In a perspective, the robot Fedor developed for Russia’s Emergencies Ministry will acquire the abilities for self-learning, the Android Technics CEO said.
"The self-learning procedure is not incorporated in the model, which is now being demonstrated. In the future, it will necessarily appear because self-learning is a major direction of the development of autonomous robotics," he said.
Currently, Fedor can already act on its own initiative within narrow scenarios, he said.”
F.E.D.O.R. is targeted to be the sole passenger of Russia’s new spacecraft, Federatsiya (even the spacecraft got a Fedor-esque name), in 2021 for the shuttle’s inaugural flight. It also will serve as a rescue unit for the Emergencies Ministry.
Our human counterpart to this amazing machine will face fellow Bellator heavyweight, Matt Mitrione this summer on the Bellator 180 card, live from New York’s Madison Square Garden. Maybe they can train Robo-Fedor to walk “The Last Emperor” out to the cage. *Crosses fingers*
