The highly anticipated UFC 209 pay-per-view took a major blow on Friday when it was announced that the interim lightweight championship tilt between top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson had been cancelled.

The announcement was made after Nurmagomedov, 28, was hospitalized in Las Vegas on Friday morning due to weight cutting issues. 'The Eagle' also missed weight in his 2013 bout against Abel Trujillo but still fought at a catchweight of 158.5 lbs.

Although UFC 209 will still feature a headlining welterweight championship rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson, many fans crowned Nurmagomedov-Ferguson as the true main event.

Several pro fighters reacted to the news on Twitter.

With Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson now scrapped, Lando Vannata vs. David Teymur will feature as the new co-main event for UFC 209. The PPV takes place later tonight, March 4, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bloody Elbow will keep you updated on Nurmagomedov's health and any possible changes to the card.
