Saturday night in New York City, Gennady Golovkin took on Daniel Jacobs and ended up in a much closer fight than what most people expected. Despite getting knocked down in the 4th round, Jacobs kept active for most of the fight, taking several rounds up until the final bell.

Jacobs managed to end Golovkin’s KO streak, but ultimately, the three judges still thought that the long reigning champion did enough to retain his belt.

Judge Max DeLuca scored it 114-113, while Don Trella and Steve Welsfield both had it 115-112 all for GGG. Here’s how they ended up with those scores:

All three judges gave Triple G four of the first five rounds, with the obvious 10-8 on the 4th after the knockdown. They gave more rounds to Jacobs from then on, but Golovkin still managed to end up with the victory.

The challenger impressed and exceeded expectations by ending up in a really close fight with one of the top pound-for-pound boxers today. But in the end, the judges didn’t think it was enough to score the massive upset.

Do you agree with the decision? For what it’s worth, Bloody Elbow’s Fraser Coffeen scored it as 114-113 for GGG.
