For two straight years, Joanna Jędrzejczyk ruled over the UFC’s strawweight division, beating one challenger after another. But at UFC 217, it all changed when she tasted her first career defeat, courtesy of Rose Namajunas.
What was the high point of the fight?
From the get-go, “Thug Rose” showed sheer confidence against one of the best female strikers in the world today. She kept herself at optimum distance, and even opened up the fight with a solid leg kick.
After a few exchanges, Namajunas landed a punch that dropped Jędrzejczyk, which Daniel Cormier ruled as a possible “balance issue.” But a few moments later, she solidified it with a left hook that once again dropped Joanna, and followed it up with strikes until referee John McCarthy stepped in to stop the fight.
Where do these two go from here?
Jędrzejczyk is indeed a little too big for 115-pounds, and she could try her luck at the newly established female flyweight division. She might need to work her way up first before being granted a title shot.
It would be interesting to see who Namajunas would face next. There is Jessica Andrade, Claudia Gadelha, and Karolina Kowalkiewicz, all of whom can put up a great fight against the newly-minted champion.
Watch it now, later, or never?
As pointed out by many, this fight is reminiscent of the Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm fight of 2015. Watch it now to witness momentous another changing of the guard moment.
