UFC 217: Bisping vs. St-Pierre prelims live results, discussion, play by play

Live, blow-by-blow updates for today's UFC 217 preliminary card from New York, which is highlighted by a lightweight attraction.

The card features three title fights, with the headliner seeing UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping defending his title against the returning welterweight legend, Georges St-Pierre. The co-main is Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw for the men's 135-pound belt. Finally, Joanna Jedrzejczyk faces Rose Namajunas for the women’s strawweight championship.

This post will cover the preliminary card. The featured prelim bout takes place in the lightweight division, with James Vick meeting Joseph Duffy.

James Vick vs. Joseph Duffy

Round 1 - Duffy pumping the jab. Duffy catches a kick and lands a right. Inside leg kick too. Nice jab from Vick. Duffy with a hard leg kick. Vick with a nice straight right and an uppercut. Big overhand right from Duffy. Inside leg kick again. Nice jab from Duffy. Duffy caught a kick and kicked out Vick’s back leg. Twice. Wow. Nice combo too. Counter right connects. He scores with it again. He’s working the body too. Vick with a couple of jabs and he misses with a kick. Duffy with a takedown. Vick back to his feet quickly. Duffy with great head movement and he lands a counter left. 10-9 Duffy.

Round 2 - Duffy with a right. He’s avoiding Vick’s kicks. Head kick from Duffy. Vick with a low kick. Vick with a nice counter right of his own. Duffy comes back with a counter left. Vick again lands the counter. Vick goes back to the low kick, which seems to be having an effect on Duffy. Body kick from Duffy. Vick checks a low kick. Low kick for Vick, Duffy pops him with a counter left. Vick hurt the leg again with a kick. Vick lands a huge uppercut and Duffy is down! Duffy leaned right into it! He pounds him out right at the horn!

Walt Harris vs. Mark Godbeer

Round 1 - Godbeer with a right. Harris with a jumping front kick. Body kick from Harris blocked. Harris with a left up the middle. Harris with a single leg takedown. He moved to mount briefly, but Godbeer got back to side. Full guard now. He lands a few punches and moves Godbeer to the cage. He stacks Godbeer up and lands some hard shots. Godbeer backup with a minute to go. Harris with a left. Godbeer gets kneed in the balls and the ref asks for a stop, but Harris kicked him in the face. Yikes. Extremely blatant. The fight has been called because Godbeer is messed up. It’s a DQ.

Corey Anderson vs. Ovince Saint Preux

Round 1 - Anderson with a left. OSP with a straight left. Anderson with a takedown and he has his back. OSP escapes and they return to the feet. Anderson with a right and he’s in on a takedown again. He’s trying and trying but he can’t get it. Spinning elbow from Anderson, and he drops for a double. He settles for some cage control. Back in the center. Nice counter uppercut and a knee from Saint Preux. OSP with a big flurry at the end of the round and Anderson is down! But he ran out of time. He stole the round with that. 10-9 Saint Preux.

Round 2 - OSP with a big head kick and Anderson is hurt! His mouthpiece came out off the kick and the ref allows him a break to put it back in while Saint Preux was on him. Odd timing. Right from Anderson and he can’t get a takedown. OSP spins out. Inside leg kick from Anderson. Right connects too. He tries for a takedown again and finally gets it. He’s riding OSP’s back, but he’s back up with 1:45 to go. Anderson still has a hold of him though. He drags him back down. OSP popped up and looked for his own takedown, but he’s pressed against the fence. Anderson just controlling. I’m still going 10-9 OSP for the early damage.

Round 3 - Anderson with a leg kick. OSP with a right. Anderson charges in for a takedown, but can’t get anything. Anderson with a combo. OSP with a massive head kick and Anderson is OUT COLD!

Ovince Saint Preux defeated Corey Anderson via KO (head kick), 1:25 of round 3

Mickey Gall vs. Randy Brown

Round 1 - Brown pressuring right away. Brown with a nice combo. He misses with a big right. Gall fires back with a big right of his own. And another. They tie up against the cage. Brown lands some knees. Another nice knee to the chin. Brown with a takedown and he’s in side control. Couple of big hammerfists. Gall regains full guard. Brown stands up and kicks the legs. He jumps back into guard. Big elbows. He’s controlling Gall against the cage, not allowing him to throw up submission attempts. Gall is cut open. He’s looking for an armbar but there’s nothing there. 10-9 Brown.

Round 2 - Inside leg kick from Brown. Gall looked for a takedown but Brown ended up on top. Gall sweeps him. Brown set up a gogoplata, then an omoplata. Brown landed an illegal upkick but the ref missed it. Gall takes Brown’s back. Back to guard. Gall passes to side. Elbows from Gall. More elbows. Gall tries to mount but Brown gets full guard back again. Nope, back to side. Mickey’s all over him. He almost secured a crucifix. He tried again, and is now looking for a topside guillotine. Brown looks tired. Gall to mount but Brown scoots out. Big elbow. 10-9 Gall.

Round 3 - Brown looked like he missed with an uppercut but Gall looked hurt. Brown jumped on him and landed a bunch of shots. Gall locked him down, and he’s bleeding a lot now. Brown is just riding him against the cage. Brown opens up with some punches. Gall trying to push off the cage. Brown continuing to pressure. Gall looks stuck. Gall pulling for an arm-in guillotine. Brown popped his head out. Two hard elbows from Brown. The ref them up very late. 10-9 and 29-28 Brown.

Randy Brown defeated Mickey Gall by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)

Alexey Oleinik vs. Curtis Blaydes

Round 1 - Oleinik with a leg kick. Blaydes with a big takedown but Oleinik spins out right away. Blaydes with a leg kick. Blaydes with a jab. Leg kick and a left from Oleinik. Blaydes missing with punches. They trade big body punches in the clinch. Oleinik throwing bolos. Blaydes jabbing and trying to put together combos. Blaydes with a takedown. Oleinik hunts for an arm and Blaydes backs out right away. Blaydes with a hard leg kick and another takedown. Oleinik looknig for an armbar again but Blaybes stacks him up and moves to side. Oleinik back to his feet with 90 seconds to go. They brawl in the clinch and Blaydes lands a big uppercut. Oleinik lands one of his own. Hockey brawl in the clinch! Oleinik with a hard left. Blaydes dropped Oleinik with an uppercut! Oleinik right back up. He tries to drag Blaydes to the mat but just falls on his back. That was funny. Blaydes hurts him again right before the horn! 10-9 Blaydes.

Round 2 - They start chucking knuckles right away. Oleinik lands two big shots. Blaydes with a leg kick and an uppercut. Oleinik with an awkward right. Leg kick. Blaydes with a takedown. Oleinik has a big cut on his forehead. Blaydes let him up, but threw a kick to the face while Oleinik was on his hand and knees. The ref steps in. The kick landed to the ear, not threatening. But the doctor asks Oleinik if he can continue, and he can’t? This is so confusing. They go to the replay, and see that the kick was nothing...but Oleinik did ask to stop. So they award Blaydes the win. Off an illegal ear kick. This is a crazy sport.

Aiemann Zahabi vs. Ricardo Ramos

Round 1 - Ramos with a head kick. Zahabi clinches and lands a knee. He tries to drag Ramos to the ground but Ramos scrambles into top position. He spins for a brief omopalata. Good scramble to start. Ramos with a leg kick. Another one. Ramos with a jab. Yet another leg kick. Zahabi with an uppercut. Ramos with a nice takedown. Zahabi up right away though. Zahabi scores with a right and they clinch. They stay there for a while. Ramos with a nice judo trip and he takes Zahabi’s back late. 10-9 Ramos.

Round 2 - Ramos with a head kick. He kicks the front leg again. Zahabi with a right. He’s pressuring. Zahabi landed a right hook as Ramos threw a kick. He goes back to the jab. Ramos lands a left. He looks for a flying knee but Zahabi caught him. Nice uppercut from Zahabi. Ramos fires back with a jab and a leg kick. Shovel left from Ramos. Jabs from Zahabi. Ramos steps aside and lands a hard leg kick. Body shot from Zahabi. Ramos jabbing, but Zahabi lands a hard one of his own. Ramos goes back to the jab again with three in a row. Zahabi closes with his. 10-9 Zahabi.

Round 3 - Ramos with a switch kick. Zahabi with a jab. Ramos misses with a head kick. Ramos jab is effective. Big uppercut from Zahabi. Right hook from Zahabi. Zahabi with a right and a head kick. Ramos with a spinning elbow and Zahabi is out cold! Holy cow!
