Having suffered his second stoppage loss in three weeks, and his first (T)KO defeat since 2013, former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has been handed a 60-day medical suspension after Kelvin Gastelum wiped him out in just 2:30 in last week’s UFC Shanghai main event.
Bisping had replaced Anderson Silva on short notice following the latter’s USADA drug test failure. The Brit had just fought Georges St-Pierre in the UFC 217 main event on November 4th, getting dropped with a left hook and then choked unconscious in the third round. There was some pre-fight skepticism over the decision to allow him to compete after the GSP loss, and in fact the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) initially had him as suspended for 30 days. As it turned out, he was apparently cleared by a commission doctor after undergoing medical testing and got his suspension reduced to seven days. UFC analyst Joe Rogan was critical of the decision to allow Bisping to fight Gastelum, in what was the quickest turnaround of Bisping’s entire career.
The 60-day suspension comes courtesy of the UFC, who self-regulated their debut show in mainland China. Bisping plans to end his career with a bout in London, with that event currently set for March 14th.
