While we’re on the subject of combat sports tournaments, the World Boxing Super Series semifinals will commence early next year, and the first (and definitely the highets profile) matchup now has a date and venue.

George Groves will defend his WBA super-middleweight title against fellow Englishman Chris Eubank Jr. at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England on February 17th. The winner will advance to the tournament final in May, and will await the winner of Callum Smith vs. Juergen Braehmer.

Groves won his quarterfinal bout vs. Jamie Cox by body shot KO in the 4th round, while Eubank Jr. put away Avni Yildirim with a vicious KO in the 3rd round. While Groves has been a longtime 168-pound competitor, and is best known for his memorable two-fight series with Carl Froch, Eubank Jr. is a recent arrival to the division, and so far he’s looked outstanding.

It should be a tremendous atmosphere in England, where the fight will be broadcast on ITV Box Office pay-per-view. A US television deal for the semifinals has not yet been reached.

Here are the brackets for the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight and super-middleweight divisions:
