As first reported by MMA Junkie, #2 ranked UFC light heavyweight Volkan Oezdemir was arrested yesterday by Fort Lauderdale Police and placed in the Broward County jail. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Oezdemir was arrested for aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability.

At this time of writing Oezdemir is listed as ‘pending trial’ with bond set at $10,000. No information on this case, from either the Broward County Sheriff’s Office or the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, is currently available.

Oezdemir, 28-years-old, first fought for the UFC in February of this year. Prior to that, the Swiss national amassed an 11-1 record fighting in promotions such as Bellator, Akhmat Fight Show, and Brazil’s Lions FC.

Oezdemir’s first UFC fight was as a late notice replacement opponent for Ovince Saint Preux. Oezdemir won that fight by split decision and then put together back to fight wins over Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa. Each of those wins came via knockout within 30 seconds of the first round.

Those two victories cemented Oezdemir in the top three of the 205lb rankings, prompting champion Daniel Cormier to declare him as his next title challenger.

After Cormier’s announcement, Oezdemir told MMA Fighting that the light heavyweight title fight was not confirmed. However, he did say that talks were ongoing and UFC 220 was a likely landing spot for the contest. That event is scheduled for January 20th, 2018 at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass.

It is unclear if Oezdemir’s arrest will have an impact on this potential fight booking.

Oezdemir is presumed innocent of all charges until proved guilty.
