Combat Jiu Jitsu is making waves in competitive grappling and the kickoff of CJJ Worlds featured the sport center stage. With the first major event under wraps, Vagner Rocha earned the first lightweight title while Chad George earned the bantamweight championship.

Combat Jiu Jitsu is a blend between striking and grappling that has been featured at past Eddie Bravo Invitational. Sunday’s event focused solely on the CJJ space and featured some of the biggest names in both mixed martial arts and competitive grappling.

UFC veteran and ADCC bronze medalist, Rocha, took home the title when he stopped 10th Planet standout, Nathan Orchard, in regulation by TKO due to strikes. Rocha tore through the competition, stopping all three of his opponents in regulation. Mikey Zindler fell to a rear naked choke while Jason Hayden was submitted via arm bar in regulation as well. Orchard made it to the finals with a submission win over Samson Phommabout in his first round match via rear naked choke and defeated James Gonzalez by fastest escape time in overtime.

George also brought a wealth of experience in grappling and mixed martial arts to the mats on Sunday. George has competed for major organizations such as Bellator and World Extreme Cage fighting, and also competed in the Eddie Bravo Invitational and Metamoris.

George found his way to the finals by defeating Nathan Trepagnier with a D’arce choke in regulation in the first round. He then defeated Sheridan Moran in the semi-finals with a rear naked choke in the second overtime period. Sidemar Honorio also fell to George’s rear naked choke, but did so in the first overtime period of the finals.

The special match of the night featured Ben Eddy getting a highlight-reel victory over former UFC bantamweight challenger Wilson Reis with what is known as a dead orchard triangle-arm bar combination.
