Colby Covington won a back and forth decision against Demian Maia as the co-main event of the UFC’s event in Sao Paulo, Brazil. As Daniel Cormier interviewed him after the victory, the American decided to berate the host nation and its people.
“I should’ve knocked (Maia) out,” Covington said, before following up by screaming insults to the country and its citizens. “Brazil, you’re a dump! All you filthy animals suck!”
No translator needed. Colby Covington, let us know how you really feel about Tyron Woodley and Brazil. Good grief! https://t.co/MtLOLyBwGv— FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) October 29, 2017
They usually give the mic to the translator during interviews, but on this case, they didn’t. The crowd still understood what happened though, and Covington was booed and pelted with trash as he was walking out the cage.
Playing the ‘heel’ or trying to be the ‘bad guy’ to market and make a name for yourself is certainly part of the sport. But that being said, the 29-year-old American certainly had much better ways to achieve that than to insult an entire nation and their citizens.
Covington seems to crave for that notoriety on interviews that his actual bouts still haven’t gotten him, but calling Brazilians a bunch of ‘filthy animals’ gets the wrong type of attention, and only also shows a lack of character.
