Ever since Cris Cyborg started fighting in the UFC, her time as Invicta champ has seemed like it was heading for an end. And while the promotion hasn’t stripped her of the belt, they’re certainly taking the first step toward that possibility.
Cyborg was recently flagged by USADA, reportedly for her use of Spironolactone, which she says she took to recover from her last weight cut. She’s preparing to present a case arguing against the potential 12-month suspension that her flagged drug test could get her. But, between a UFC career and her USADA troubles, that’s a lot of unknowns for Invicta to deal with in one of their title holders.
To that end, Invicta has announced via press release that they’ll be promoting their upcoming Invicta FC 21 headlining bout between Megan Anderson and Charmaine Tweet to an interim featherweight title fight.
Anderson (7-2) is one of the more prominent rising stars in women’s featherweight MMA. She’s currently on a 3-fight win-streak, with all wins coming by KO. Most recently she defeated Peggy Morgan at Invicta FC 18.
For Charmaine Tweet (9-5) this will be her second chance at Invicta gold. She faced Cris Cyborg back in 2015, losing by KO in round 1. Since then, however, she’s rattled off her own 3-fight streak. She picked up a pair of wins in Prestige FC and a successful return to Invicta last May, KOing Latoya Walker in round 1 at Invicta FC 17.
Invicta FC 21 takes place on January 14th in Kansas City, Missouri. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for more news and updates as the event approaches.
