In last night's HBO Boxing PPV main event, Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) predictably put away the tough, gutsy, but overmatched Liam Smith (23-1-1, 13 KOs) to capture Smith's WBO junior middleweight (154 lbs) title. Official attendance at Cowboys Stadium was listed at 51,240, on what was Mexican Independence Day weekend. Canelo dropped Smith three times, including a vicious left hook body shot in the 9th round to end the beating.

More boxing coverage: Bad Left Hook
R7: Smith traps Canelo against the ropes, but just when things are going his way, Canelo blasts back with a nasty hook that puts Smith on the canvas. Smith jabs and clinches his way through most of the round, and does manage to throw a few shots at the end, but he's in big trouble. 10-8 Canelo
R8: Smith down again after a series of uppercuts and a perfect body shot. Canelo is going right at the body now, and Smith is wincing. Hard to envision this going too much longer. 10-8 Canelo
R9: Canelo dominating in the early stages of the round, lands another huge body shot, and Smith is down and writhing on the floor. The referee wisely calls it off and this fight is over. KO for Canelo
