The UFC 203: Miocic vs. Overeem main card kicked off with an enticing and highly intriguing women's strawweight showdown between Brazil's Jessica Andrade and Scotland's Joanne Calderwood. Andrade was making her 2nd appearance at 115, having won her debut in the division in spectacular fashion. Meanwhile, Calderwood was making her return to 115 after a one-off showing at 125, where she TKO'd Valerie Letourneau. Fireworks were expected between these two high-octane strikers.
Knees by Calderwood in the clinch, while Andrade dug into the body. Early takedown by Andrade was stuffed but she turned it into offense by throwing some good knees to the body. She successfully completed a takedown on the Scotswoman, but Calderwood worked her way back up. Power slam by Andrade straight into side control. She tried advancing to mount but Calderwood denied her and Andrade settled for half-guard. Armbar attempt by Calderwood resulted in a slam and Andrade working from the top with ground-and-pound. Calderwood's guard opened up again and Andrade advanced to side mount again. Joanne with the underhook tried to sweep her way back to standing but Andrade wasn't having it. More big ground-and-pound by Andrade as she postured up, pushed aside the legs, and went back to side control, then a loose half-guard. Calderwood rose to her feet but left her neck exposed. Andrade dropped down for the guillotine and forced the tap. Utter domination by Jessica Andrade, who is 2-0 in her new weight class, and a clear contender.
Official result: Jessica Andrade def. Joanne Calderwood via submission (guillotine choke) at 4:38 of round 1
