Number eight-ranked featherweight Dennis Bermudez is currently on a fast-track to title contention. On Saturday night at the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 92, he was able to carry on a streak through a dominant victory over Rony Jason.
What was the high point of the fight?
Bermudez immediately stepped on the gas pedal upon referee John McCarthy’s official signal of commencing the fight. But the clincher of the night was when he landed the sharp elbow in the final minute and a half of the first round that opened up the cut on Jason’s forehead.
From then on, the Brazilian visibly slowed his pace down, but did have his moments of brilliance when he was able to get hold of Bermudez’ back and attempt a rear naked choke in the dying minutes of the third round. "The Menace", however, still managed to keep his poise to handle the scrambles and eventually pick up the decision win.
Where do these two go from here?
Currently unranked, Rony Jason may slip further down the ladder, and it could take a while before he gets a shot at a bigger-named opponent. Bermudez, on the other hand, will expectedly ascend the rankings to position himself for a fight against a top-five opponent.
He could face either Ricardo Lamas in a rematch, or Cub Swanson, who is also coming off a victory against Tatsuya Kawajiri in the night’s Fight Pass prelim fight. The UFC could also heed his post-fight challenge to Frankie Edgar for a possible fight at UFC 205 in New York in November.
Watch it now, later or never?
Given both men have always held the reputation of being all-action fighters, it did translate well into the actual contest, making it a must-see fight.
Body kick attempted by Bermudez but Jason connects and sends him to the canvas! Entertaining fight so far! #UFCSLC https://t.co/Fjk1a5dHXI
