HBO Boxing tonight features the last stop on the road to this fall's biggest fight. In November, Andre Ward takes on Sergey Kovalev in a highly anticipated Light Heavyweight match-up. At a time when you have lopsided PPV fights like Canelo Alvarez vs. Liam Smith and Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas, Kovalev vs. Ward is exactly the fight you want to see, and it's on the way, we hope. Tonight's fight is the last stop on that path - a showcase fight for Ward as he takes on Alexander Brand. Kovalev had his own showcase fight a few weeks ago, defeating Isaac Chilemba. Now Ward gets his turn. It's not a competitive, or frankly even a very interesting fight. But it's a chance to see one more time what Ward will bring to the ring against the dangerous Kovalev in November.
Ward vs. Brand is the only fight on the HBO broadcast tonight.
HBO World Championship Boxing Ward vs. Brand airs live on HBO tonight, Saturday August 6 with a fight time of 10:30 p.m. ET. For more on the card, check out our Bloody Elbow fight breakdown, and also follow our colleagues at Bad Left Hook.
Andre Ward vs. Alexander Brand
Dominating performance from Andre Ward. Brand's punches all night were wide, looping, and awkward shots that Ward easily avoided, with Brand landing less than 50 punches in the fight. In roughly round 7, Ward picked up the offense slightly, landing some stiffer shots, but never dropping or truly hurting Brand. Brand was cut in round 7, with Ward suffering a small cut late in the fight - neither impacted the action in the end.
