As we revisit the entertaining bout, I guess this is also a good time to dispel a myth that has been put out by McGregor and a lot of fans.
Conor has repeatedly said that "the boy got lucky" as he just got "tired" after "butchering" and "dominating" him on the first round. If you re-watch it, get past the blood and all the bold statements they repeat for months, you would clearly see that it was a highly competitive and closely contested opening round.
McGregor whiffed on a lot of his power shots, while Diaz did a good job of rolling with the punches to land some decent jabs and counters. Both men landed well, and neither guy came close to "slapping around" anyone at that point.
And while it's easy to forget because of the ending, Conor's biggest and best shots were actually landed early in the second stanza.
I guess some of these were failed to be remembered, or possibly ignored, after all the chaos surrounding the massive upset, and understandably so. Everything aside, it was still a really excellent fight. Relive the action above and have fun as we get closer to the rematch.
