Following a dramatic week of tense build-up and anticipation, UFC 202 lived up to expectations. This was particularly due to the main event between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, which delivered a thrilling five-round affair that was eventually ruled a split decision victory for the Irishman.
Naturally, Diaz contested the majority decision ruling in McGregor's favor and insisted that he "didn't lose the fight." The fight was scored 48-47, 47-47, 48-47, where judges Jeff Mullen and Derek Cleary each gave McGregor three rounds. However, Glen Towbridge also scored the third round a 10-8 for Diaz, which led to a draw on his scoresheet.
In the immediate aftermath of the 'Fight of the Year' candidate, McGregor and Diaz both showed interest in a trilogy fight, though McGregor insisted that the final encounter should take place at lightweight. Their two meetings to date have taken place at welterweight, including the short notice UFC 196 encounter where Diaz defeated McGregor with a rear-naked choke in the second round.
