Kelvin Gastelum has arrived. The youngest TUF winner in UFC history was given a huge opportunity at UFC 200, getting a matchup with former champion Johny Hendricks. It wasn't easy, but Gastelum came up big and defeated Bigg Rigg by unanimous decision behind a strong striking game. The judges had it 29-28, 30-27, and 30-27 for Gastelum.
Gastelum looked excellent in the first round, peppering Hendricks with a bunch of right/straight left combos that Hendricks didn't have an answer for until the end of the round. Hendricks landed some hard lefts as well, but it was Gastelum controlling the range and the striking overall.
Hendricks had a much better second round. He was able to keep Gastelum off of him for the most part, peppering him with lefts and leg kicks. Gastelum had limited success, and it was a very nice high-level striking battle, but Hendricks definitely won the round.
The third was decisive due to gas tanks - Gastelum's pace stayed the same, and Johny's did not. He was visibly gassed, which allowed Gastelum to be all over him for a lot of the round. The two men threw with reckless abandon for the last 15 seconds of the fight, which was fun, but it was clear who the winner was.
