There's no fooling Chael Sonnen. When news got out of Jon Jones' potential USADA anti-doping violation, 'The American Gangster' said it confirmed what he'd always suspected.
Speaking to ESPN yesterday (h/t Jed Meshew of MMA Fighting), Sonnen said he couldn't understand why it took so long for the United States Anti-Doping Agency to catch 'Bones'.
"I can just tell you guys, I've been in his shoes," Sonne said. "As a guy that lived in that world and took the banned substances and served the suspension, if there's one thing about us, we know our own. When a guy takes his shirt off I can tell you what he's on and how long he's been doing it and my first reaction was simply, what took them so long?"
Sonnen, who fought and lost to Jones at UFC 159, failed multiple drug tests in 2014 and was axed as a UFC on FOX Sports analyst. Since his two-year suspension by the NSAC, the three-time title challenger has competed in grappling tournaments and now serves as an MMA analyst for ESPN.
Jones, who was expected to rematch Daniel Cormier in a light heavyweight title unification bout at UFC 200, was removed from the event and could be looking at a two-year suspension for his potential anti-doping violation. The widely acclaimed pound-for-pound #1 had tested positive for cocaine in the past but not for performance-enhancing drugs. Given that the USADA do not test for substances such as cocaine in their out-of-competition drug tests, it's likely that Jones flagged for performance-enhancers.
The UFC 200 extravaganza is still scheduled to take place this Saturday, July 9, and will feature Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt as the new main event. The pay-per-view will mark the UFC's debut at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
