Robbie Lawler explains why he vowed to take McGregor's soul

'Ruthless' explains the reason behind his intimidating warning to 'The Notorious' last month, in which Lawler vowed to take McGregor's soul if they ever met in the Octagon.

Robbie Lawler shook up the headlines in June when he vowed to take Conor McGregor's soul if the Irishman ever challenged him for the welterweight title.

Ruthless made the statement to WSB-TV during a promotional interview for his championship bout with Tyron Woodley. According to Lawler, the question about McGregor irritated him. The 170-pound champ was there to discuss his title fight with Woodley and doesn't understand why McGregor's name keeps being brought up.

Lawler went into detail on Wednesday's edition of UFC Tonight.

"He asked me a question and I was like 'why are you bringing this guy's name up?' " Lawler told Kenny Florian and Daniel Cormier, per Damon Martin of FOX Sports. "It kind of irritated me so I just told him what I thought about the situation and his last fight and I don't think he should be mentioned with me because I'm not like everybody else. I'm a little different."

The question has been brought up repeatedly since McGregor entertained the possibility of challenging for the welterweight title prior to his fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 196. The SBG Ireland product, however, was submitted in the second round and the welterweight hype train came to a screeching halt. McGregor will look to avenge his loss to Diaz when he rematches the Californian at UFC 202 on August 20th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lawler, who has cemented himself as a pound-for-pound great, only has Woodley on his mind and will look to make a statement at UFC 201. The pay-per-view, which features a championship tilt between Lawler and Woodley in the main event, takes place later tonight, July 30, at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
