In the co-main event of UFC 200, former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar returned to the UFC against Mark Hunt on Saturday night -- and he was successful. Surprisingly to most, the fight went the distance and was rather lackluster. The only clear round was the third, in favor of Lesnar, who nearly got the finish in the final minutes of the heavyweight fight.
What was the highlight of the fight?
Oh, man. Do I really have to pick out of a highlight of this fight? I thought it would be so easy -- "Mark Hunt's walk-off knockout was beautiful," or "Lesnar's ground-and-pound TKO was absolutely vicious." But I thought wrong. Lesnar grinded out the victory on Saturday, but his performance lacked the finish almost everyone expected (from either side -- Hunt or Lesnar). I can't blame him for having a rather boring return -- he hadn't fought since the end of 2011. Nevertheless, the highlight of the fight was Lesnar's post-fight interview, in which he thanked the US troops, despite representing Canada for this fight.
Where do these two go from here?
Lesnar just defeated a top 10 heavyweight, so I can't complain too much. If he continues fighting for the UFC, he's definitely right back in the mix. It all comes down to the UFC's deal with the WWE and whether or not Lesnar's "one-off" deal with the mixed martial arts promotion will extend. If it doesn't, I suppose it's back to pro-wrestling for the former champ. But if I were to guess, I'd say Lesnar will be back in the Octagon in the foreseeable future.
Hunt, on other hand, has to make a trip back to the drawing board. At 42-years-old, the New Zealander should definitely contemplate retirement. He has had a very legendary career but will unlikely ever move up any higher in the rankings or earn another title shot. There are a handful of options at heavyweight if he does want to continue fighting, however.
Watch now, later or never?
Ehhh... I'd pass.
