Like most of the MMA community, Rory MacDonald was surprised with the UFC's decision to book Tyron Woodley against Robbie Lawler for the welterweight title at UFC 201.
Woodley, 34, hasn't fought since his split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum in January, 2015, which now marks a 17-month absence from the sport.
MacDonald, who beat Woodley decisively at UFC 174, believes Demian Maia was more deserving of the title shot after submitting Matt Brown last month at Arenda da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil and proving to be a more active fighter.
'The Red King' spoke to MMA Junkie about the matchmaking process ahead of his showdown with Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson on June 18.
"I thought they were going to give it to Demian Maia," MacDonald said. "I was a bit surprised that Woodley got it. But the champ needs to stay busy, wants to fight, and Woodley was patiently waiting. He was ready. It's how it plays out. Sometimes it's not always the rightful guy gets the shot."
After an action packed five-round fight between Lawler and Carlos Condit at UFC 195, many expected an immediate rematch between the two welterweights after 'Ruthless' was crowned victor in a controversial split decision.
MacDonald fought and lost to Lawler in another championship slugfest at UFC 189, which saw the Canadian eventually wilt in the fifth round due to a shattered nose. MacDonald will headline the UFC Fight Night 89 card against Wonderboy in front of his home crowd at TD Place Arena in Canada on June 18.
Woodley (5-2 UFC, 15-3 MMA) will challenge Lawler for the 170-pound belt at the UFC 201 pay-per-view at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on July 30.
