Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold says he underestimated Michael Bisping leading into their UFC 199 rematch.

Luke Rockhold was unsuccessful in his first middleweight title defense, losing to Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 199 on Saturday night. Rockhold suffered a devastating first-round knockout defeat to Bisping, a short notice replacement and massive underdog leading the matchup.

During fight week at the pre-fight press conference, Rockhold revealed he tore his MCL in his UFC 199 training camp. However, in his backstage post-fight interview on Saturday, he did not blame the knee injury for the loss. Instead, he says he simply underestimated Bisping's skill-set.

"It was just underestimating Bisping," he told UFC's Megan Olivi. "It wasn't anything to do with my knee. Underestimated and over-committed with my jab. It was stupid, I just didn't really feel like he had anything for me. I should've just been the guy I should be. I got caught. I just didn't see him having anything for me and I just over-committed."

Bisping's power did not necessarily surprise Rockhold. But in his opinion, Bisping was able to capitalize on his mistakes, and landed the pair of left hands at exactly the right time.

"It's not about hitting hard, it's about hitting in the right spot and in the right moment. I reached in with a jab and I faded out with my chin wide open and he lunged in and caught me on the tip of the chin. So, I felt I was gonna control the fight but he caught me."

It's unlikely we see Bisping vs. Rockhold III right away, because Rockhold was not a dominant champion, as he only won the belt last December. But again, the UFC likes its automatic rematch so we could see the trilogy fight sooner rather than later, and that is what Rockhold is hoping for.

"I'd love nothing more than a rematch. I'd love nothing more than to get my belt back."
