Back at UFC 181, the UFC dropped a major surprise in announcing the signing of former WWE champion and superstar CM Punk (aka Phil Brooks), who had just gone through a rather acrimonious split from the pro-wrestling goliath. This was the night of December 6th, 2014.
His debut has been pushed back quite a bit and never made official, but now the wait is over. As he announced on UFC Unfiltered, Punk will finally be facing the man that got his shot at the UFC by calling him out, Mickey Gall.
Gall made his UFC debut this past February against Mike Jackson at UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs Thompson and notched a first round submission win. The New Jersey native's professional record improved to 2-0, yet he also has an amateur record of 3-0 with two submission wins and one decision.
Needless to say, Punk has a very steep hill to climb here. Gall trains with the Miller brothers in New Jersey and has five fights under his belt, whereas Punk has no MMA or competitive combat sports experience. This will be an interesting match no matter what, and we finally get to see how this experiment plays out.
UFC 203 takes place live from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH on September 10th, 2016. The card will be headlined by Alistair Overeem taking on heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic
