I don't think the UFC will be coming calling for Fedor Emelianenko any time soon. The 39-year-old legend returned to the cage today at Eurasia Fight Nights 50 to take on ex-UFC light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado, and he barely scraped out a victory.
The first round saw Maldonado take advantage of a Fedor mistake, which gave him the opportunity to beat Fedor up on the ground. He got up, but was battered around the cage for most of the rest of the round. Fedor did have some moments, and used some stuff you don't normally see out of him (like a high kick), but he basically got the tar beat out of him. It was a wild, sloppy, and fun first stanza.
Early in the second though, it appeared that Maldonado had gassed himself out. He still tried to pressure now and again, but it was mostly Fedor cornering him and opening up with combos, which Maldonado generally defended. Fedor did land a bunch of clean shots though, and Maldonado's face was a mess by the end of the round. Fedor's was pretty busted up too.
The third saw the pace slow even more, with both men trying to land when they had the energy to. Fedor scored a lot more though, mixing in leg kicks with combos against the cage and even another high kick. He clearly won the last two rounds.
In the end, it came down to how you scored the first round. It could have easily been a 10-8 for Maldonado, and one judge did indeed have it that way. The other two disagreed though, giving Fedor the last two rounds and the majority decision victory.
