New, comments

Jacare Souza may have secured himself a UFC middleweight title shot with a smashing of a bloodied Vitor Belfort in the UFC 198 co-main event.

The co-main event of UFC 198 pitted veteran middleweight contenders Ronaldo Souza and Vitor Belfort against each other, with a possible title shot on the line. Jacare was looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Yoel Romero, while Vitor was aiming for another win after he'd KO'd Dan Henderson late last year.

Belfort threw a flying knee as Jacare shot for a takedown, then sprawled and returned to his feet. Jacare pushed forward again for a takedown and Vitor held firm against the fence and threw some clinch uppercuts. Back to the center of the Octagon they went, and Jacare threw a body kick. Souza got a takedown on his next attempt after he pulled the legs underneath from "The Phenom." Big ground-and-pound by Jacare, postured up on Vitor. Referee Osiris Maia stopped the fight to have the doctor check on Vitor's cut, which saw blood trickle into his left eye.

The fight continued with the ref restarting them from the previous position. Vitor scrambled back to his feet after Jacare went for an armbar. Belfort pulled guard and then threw some upkicks. Big right hands thrown by Jacare. Full mount for the former Strikeforce champion and he sealed the deal with more ground-and-pound on a seriously bloodied Belfort. What a performance by Jacare, who shut Belfort down.

Official results: Ronaldo Souza def. Vitor Belfort via TKO (punches) at 4:38 of round 1
