UFC 198: Werdum vs Miocic (prelims) live results, play by play

Before the live pay-per-view begins, catch some live coverage of tonight's UFC 198 preliminary cards on UFC Fight Pass and Fox Sports 1, which offer seven match-ups in all.

Join us tonight on Bloody Elbow for live results, discussion and play-by-play as the UFC 198: Werdum vs Miocic preliminary bouts lead into the evening's main card on pay-per-view. The event takes place in Curitiba, Brazil, and is headlined by UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum defending the title against top contender Stipe Miocic.

Chaw-chewin' scrapper Matt Brown captains the preliminary card roster in a welterweight tilt against Jiu-Jitsu phenom Demian Maia. Also on the prelims: 51-fight veteran Nate Marquardt meets Thiago Santos in the middleweight class, former flyweight John Lineker launches his second UFC foray at bantamweight against Rob Font, and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, aka "Lil' Nog," squares off with Patrick Cummins in a light-heavyweight contest.

Preliminary Card (FS1, 8 PM ET)

Matt Brown vs. Demian Maia

R1: They square off in the center, Brown has both hands down at his waist. Maia gets deep on a double-leg and takes Brown down despite a fence-grab on the way down. Brown battles back to his feet and Maia slips behind him with the rear waist cinch and one triangle hook in from behind. Maia jumps on his back and puts both hooks in, crossing his ankles and grape-vining a leg.

Maia off-balances Brown and cinches on a body triangle, then starts fishing for a choke to the sheer elation of the Brazilian crowd. Python-like control from Maia in back mount. Brown takes a knee and hand-fights to protect his neck. Brown looks for an arm-drag and Maia counters with an armbar attempt from back mount, but it's too lose and Brown spins into his guard. 10-9 Maia.

R2: Brown repels an immediate single-leg attempt from Maia. Maia goes after another one, this time reversing direction and using the leg as a lever to off-balance Brown. Maia again teleports to back control during the first semblance of a transition. Maia drops both feet on the ground and takes Brown down from the rear waist lock, cinching on a body triangle.

It's a mirror image of the first round with Brown hand-fighting the choke with Maia attached to his back. Maia switches the pace with two minutes left and lands a pair of hammer-fists to the head. Brown tries to power up to his feet but Maia drags him back down. Seatbelt hold from Maia in back mount, then he lets it go, looking for more hammer-fists. A volley of sharp elbows to the head land from Maia, who goes for a risky armbar in the waning seconds. 10-9 Maia.

R3: Brown, per his corner's advice, keeps his distance and neutralizes a takedown, then clips Maia with a short uppercut. Maia falls onto his back, making it unclear whether he's hurt. Brown tries to be cautious when following him down but Maia gets under his hips and sweeps him.

Maia nearly passes to mount but Brown halts him with a butterfly hook, then goes to double butterfly to elevate Maia and half-escape -- but Maia again slithers to his back and locks on the body triangle. Maia goes for a face crank to the delight of the crowd, but the feisty Brown hand-fights his way out of danger. Maia finally threads his forearm under Brown's chin and forces the tapout seconds later.

Nate Marquardt vs. Thiago Santos

R1: Santos is busy with kicks from range, mostly front kicks and roundhouse kicks with the rear leg. Marquardt answers with an outside low kick. Now one inside from Marquardt. More left high kicks from Santos though Marquardt deflects them, then checks a low kick. Marquardt shield blocks a left kick to the body but he digests a nasty left cross and falls onto his back.

Santos follows him into guard; Marquardt shrimps out and stands up quickly. Another heavy left kick to the body from Santos, then he rips off a trio of one-twos upstairs, the last of which crumples Marquardt.

Yancy Medeiros vs. Francisco Trinaldo

R1: Medeiros slips in a right kick to the ribs. Trinaldo gets inside with a body lock but can't hoist Medeiros, and he settles for putting him on the cage. Trinaldo looking for an inside trip but Medeiros uses one of his double over-hooks as a whizzer to stay upright. Trinaldo goes for a sloppy throw and it allows Medeiros to circle off and put him on the cage. No dice for Medeiros on the single leg and they trade positions on the fence.

Medeiros counters with a body lock to circle off and lands a knee up the middle. They separate just past the halfway mark with Trinaldo landing an inside low kick. Trinaldo forces another clinch but can't get the inside trip. Glancing lead left hook from Medeiros, then a solid front kick to the gut. Counter left lands upstairs for Trinaldo, then he glances with a one-two. Another glancing left hand from Trinaldo. And another after Medeiros lands a front kick to the body. Another massive left from Trinaldo wobbles Medeiros. Trinaldo tees off, landing almost at will as Medeiros stumbles around the Octagon, showing an impressive chin. 10-8 Trinaldo.

R2: Medeiros opens with a hook and a right cross to the body. Trinaldo fires a left upstairs, then glances with a right-hook uppercut. Trinaldo lands a left to the body and clubs Medeiros with a right to the face. Front kick to the body from Medeiros as Trinaldo's pace slows down a notch. Heavy left kick to the body is there for Trinaldo, then a heavy left upstairs.

They trade shots in open space. They clinch up and Trinaldo lands a knee to the body, then snaps the head down in the front headlock. Medeiros gets wrist control to escape but Trinaldo dings him with a left high kick. Trinaldo goes on the attack again, finding the mark with two overhand lefts. Now a left body kick from Trinaldo. Medeiros answers with a front kick to the body. Medeiros digs to the body with a long right cross. Trinaldo lands a left hand as Medeiros leads with an uppercut. Medeiros misses a spinning kick but catches Trinaldo with a quick left, then Medeiros drops him with a right before the horn sounds. 10-9 Medeiros.

R3: A pair of heavy inside low kicks land for Trinaldo early. Medeiros catches the next kick and lands a right hand. Spinning heel kick to the body lands for Medeiros. Trinaldo answers with a left hand, then he buries a left kick into Medeiros's ribs. Glancing overhand left is there for Trinaldo and it might've dazed Medeiros. That looks to be the case as Trinaldo follows with another volley of lefts that send Medeiros staggering.

Medeiros smiles and waves him in and Trinaldo obliges, knocking him off-balace with another left. Medeiros tries to roll into guard but Trinaldo takes north-south. Medeiros fights back to his feet but ends up reeling sideways along the cage. Trinaldo clinches up and clobbers him with a left, and Medeiros goes back down. Trinaldo drives down a few lefts but Medeiros amazingly fights back to his feet. Trinaldo hits a trip, then gets overzealous looking for a back-take, allowing Medeiros to hit an arm-drag sweep. Top position for Medeiros with a half-minute left. Two sharp elbows from Medeiros. 10-9 Trinaldo (the late surge saved a 10-8). I have it 29-27 Trinaldo.

Rob Font vs. John Lineker

R1: Front kick to the body from Font. Font switches stances to throw two side kicks and Lineker holds his ground and plugs him with a body shot. Two glancing lefts from Font out on the bubble, using his length well. Lineker leads with a left hook to the liver and lands it, then glances with a left hook upstairs on the next exchange.

Another beefy lead left to the body from Lineker, who's starting to headhunt. Lineker chops out Font's footing with a rugged outside low kick, but he gets back to his feet. Clean jab for Font. More lead lefts to the body from Lineker, then a blast double leg that he finishes early. Font clears space and gets back to his feet but eats a few punches in the process. Same lead-left combo from Lineker to close the round. 10-9 Lineker.

R2: Lineker piles on a few unchecked outside low kicks to start the second. Double jab glances from Font. Another jogging lead-left whirlwind from Lineker followed by a wild overhand right. Lineker comes up short on a right high kick. Font answers with an inside low kick, ducking Lineker's counter.

More jabs and circling from Font until Lineker rushes him dangerously with low, wide hooks. Glancing outside low kick from Font, who's still flinging single shots from range. Lineker knifes in and gets a body lock but Font circles out and separates quickly. Font changes levels and Lineker shoves him away. Outside low kick from Lineker. Font closes with a front-leg side kick to the body. 10-9 Font.

R3: Lineker opens with another outside low kick. Now two inside for Lineker. Font eats a short right to the jaw, then another downstairs. Lineker counters a kick with an overhand right, then digs his shin into the calf with an outside low kick. Glancing two-punch combo from Font. Double left hooks to the head from Lineker, who's chasing Font down once he lets his hands go.

Lineker basically bowls Font over with a vicious buzz-saw of lefts and rights, landing in half guard. Sharp knees to the body from Lineker but Font is able to create space and stand up. Lineker catches a kick and converts it into a takedown, landing an elbow in Font's open guard. Lineker passes to side control with a minute left. Font shrimps out and scrambles back to his feet with 40 seconds left. Lineker waves both hands to incite the crowd, then steamrolls Font with another wild vortex of punches. 10-8 Lineker. I have it 29-27 Lineker.

Preliminary Card (Fight Pass, 6:30 PM ET)

Patrick Cummins vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

R1: After a tentative start, Noguiera makes a statement by easily stuffing a takedown attempt. A low stance and a snapping jab for Nogueira from distance. Two glancing right kicks from Cummins, then a front snap kick. Cummins does find the mark with an inside low kick. Another inside low kick from Cummins.

Cummins grazes with a hook counter but Nogueira dings him with a short, straight left, then swarms him with committed flurries, landing at least one or two shots. Cummins counter-clinches and is again denied on the takedown, though he crushes Nogueira's lead leg with two more kicks, unchecked. Short uppercut lands for Cummins. Nogueira glances with a one-two before sidestepping Cummins' response. Nogueira plasters Cummins with a right hook in the pocket and it puts Cummins on roller-skates. Nogueira pounces with straight lefts, dropping Cummins to the canvas. The ref lets them fight on and Nogueira pounds away, the ref finally showing mercy after Cummins stands up and eats consecutive lefts.

Sergio Moraes vs. Luan Chagas

R1: Chagas switches to southpaw and backs up Moraes with a lunging three-piece combo. Moraes sails a wild right hook over the head of Chagas. Hook/cross combos from Chagas in the orthodox stance. Cautious front kicks to the body from Chagas from distance, then a low/high left kick medley. Moraes clocks him with a clean uppercut.

Moraes tries to counter Chagas' one-two with a takedown attempt to no avail. Glancing uppercut from Moraes. Two outside low kicks for Chagas; one inside from Moraes. Chagas unbolts a wicked head kick and Moraes drops like a stone. Showing miraculous recovery, Moraes scrambles back to his feet and separates. Chagas plugs him with a left cross and it sits Moraes down on the canvas again. Front kick to the body from Chagas. 10-8 Chagas.

R2: A clubbing right hand from Moraes stuns Chagas early. Moraes tries to keep the momentum but Chagas lowers his head and marches forward, slinging lefts and rights to put Moraes on defense. More clean low kicks from Chagas; Moraes has yet to check one. Short-range uppercut from Chagas, who then blocks a high kick and loses his balance upon impact.

Chagas might be tiring, as his hands are dropping lower and he's taking long, deep breaths. Moraes snatches up a guillotine as Chagas attacks with his head lowered, then jumps guard to wrench it. Chagas patiently works his head free and freezes to persuade the referee to stand them up. Moraes with a right hand downstairs, then a single-leg attempt. Chagas counter-wrestles with a double leg, then momentarily takes the back of Moraes in a scramble. Moraes shakes him off and ends the round in top position. 10-9 Moraes.

R3: Wild overhand from Moraes to start the final frame. Moraes counter-clinches on a Chagas flurry and snaps the head down from the front headlock, then puts him on his back, landing in half guard. Chagas gets full guard and creates some space but Moraes dives back into his guard. Double ear box from Chagas in guard; an interesting tactic.

Moraes pressures with position and pass attempts, eventually forcing a scramble and getting the back-ride as Chagas turtles. Chagas craftily counters by rolling into a kneebar but Moraes frees his trapped leg and looks to insert a hook with a rear body lock. Chagas stands up, allowing Moraes to get both hooks in. With time ticking away, Moraes goes for a ballsy triangle from back control but Chagas shakes him off. 10-9 Moraes. I have it a 28-28 draw.

Renato Moicano vs. Zubaira Tukhugov

R1: Moicano grazes with a right body kick in the early going. Tukhugov engages with both hands low, whipping heaters with his head off-center. Tukhugov grabs his junk and looks at the ref, indicating he was hit in the groin, but there's no pause and he fights on. Moicano unfurling tight right/left counters with light but methodical output.

Tukhugov surprises Moicano with a lunging left hook upstairs. Tukhugov rushes forward, feinting punches, and off-balances Moicano with a schoolyard shove. Moicano gets a closed guard, then moves to rubber guard. Moicano slings a leg over the shoulder, threatening with a triangle. Tukhugov doesn't give him the angle and a few punches force Moicano back to a traditional closed guard. Moicano dings Tukhugov with a sharp up-kick, then gets his back briefly in a transition. 10-9 Moicano.

R2: Moicano comes out swinging a big looper. Now a low kick that lands followed by a jumping switch kick that doesn't for Moicano. Clubbing left hook glances for Tukhugov, then a heavy overhand right that sails into Moicano's guard. Tukhugov takes a kick to the cup but again gets nowhere in pleading to the ref, who barks for the fight to continue.

Tukhugov shoots a double from way outside and Moicano immediately sprawls, then forces Tukhugov to bail out with a choke attempt from the front headlock. Moicano whiffs with a windmill uppercut and it draws oohs from the crowd. Counter right is there for Moicano as Tukhugov's coming in. Moicano is now stalking Tukhugov, landing inside and outside low kicks from range and crisp counters in the phone booth. 10-9 Moicano.

R3: Tukhugov forces a cinch and hits a trip as a counter to Moicano's opening flurry, but he can't maintain position and Moicano slips out and back to his feet. Clean lead right lands for Tukhugov and it opens a cut on Moicano's eye. Moicano answers with a clean counter on the following exchange, then he again reverses a Tukhugov takedown with a nasty front headlock. Moicano snaps his head back with a piston-like jab, then the ref pauses the action to check Moicano's eye.

They land shots simultaneously on the restart, but Tukhugov slips in another short right. Moicano repels another Tukhugov takedown. Counter knee to the body from Moicano but he whiffs with the right hook. Heavy four-punch combo after a low kick from Moicano, who then drills Tukhugov with a left kick to the face after a misfired spinning kick. Another stuff from Moicano followed by more sharp low kicks. 10-9 Moicano. I have it 30-27 Moicano.
