The main event of UFC Fight Night 83 in Pittsburgh marked the welterweight debut of Donald Cerrone, who took on Brazil's Alex Oliveira, an opponent accepting this fight on short-notice. Would Cerrone be successful in his first outing at 170, or would the birthday boy pull off the upset in the battle of Cowboys?
The two Cowboys wasted no time coming out aggressively. Oliveira kneed Cerrone a couple of times in the clinch and then pushed him to the fence. USA! USA! chants went around the Pittsburgh arena. As they returned to range, Oliveira fired a spinning back kick to the body that just missed. Oliveira was swinging for the fences. Cerrone went for a trip takedown but the Brazilian remained upright. Oliveira over-committed to a right hand and Cerrone countered beautifully with a takedown into guard just 2 minutes into the 1st. Oliveira's half-guard was incredibly wide open and Cerrone easily passed to mount, set up a triangle choke and Oliveira tapped right away. He tapped about 9 times before Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight.
Official result: Donald Cerrone def. Alex Oliveira by submission (triangle choke) at 2:33 of round 1
Cerrone picks up the 5th submission win of his UFC career, and his 16th overall. Oliveira drops to 3-2 in the UFC, with both losses coming by submission.
